Ampleforth College recommends that you and your child attend its open events prior to applying for a place in Year 7. They include tours of the school and meetings with staff members and current pupils.
The admissions process includes entrance assessments, taking place on Assessment day, held at Ampleforth College.

To join in Year 7, your child will be asked to complete an online assessment called the ISEB Common Pretest, which assesses skills in Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Here’s a brief introduction to the subjects covered in this online exam:
English
The English part of the ISEB Pretest assesses comprehension, sentence completion, spelling and punctuation.
Mathematics
The maths part of the ISEB Pretest assesses mathematical ability across the curriculum, including arithmetic and problem solving.
Verbal Reasoning
The Verbal Reasoning part of the ISEB Pretest assesses thinking and problem solving with words.
Non-Verbal Reasoning
The Non-Verbal Reasoning part assesses thinking with shapes, space, diagrams and pictures.
The exam lasts approximately 2.5 hours. The timings for each section are listed below:
– English – 25 minutes
– Maths – 50 minutes
– Verbal reasoning – 36 minutes
– Non-Verbal reasoning – 32 minutes
