Introduction

Bancroft’s School is a co-ed independent day school based in Woodford Green, London Borough of Redbridge. It was established in 1737 and is one of the UK’s highest performing schools. Bancroft’s alumni list is long and impressive, featuring Members of Parliament and Victoria Cross recipients. [1]

The school’s comprehensive curriculum, aimed at maximising pupils’ abilities across a range of disciplines, is balanced with a broad programme of enrichment activities. Through this programme, pupils embark on exciting journeys to far-off destinations, such as South Africa, Singapore, Malaysia and Barbados, familiarising themselves with different cultures and ways of living in the process of self-discovery.

To take the edge off the often rigorous in-class teaching, Bancroft’s offers a broad timetable of extracurriculars, including Jewish Society, chess, debating, fencing and German Spelling Bee, through which it enables students to pursue current interests and discover new passions as they progress through the school. [2]

The pastoral care system is centred on kindness and excellence, nurturing each child on campus through a balanced and overarching approach to addressing their individual needs. The communication between students and staff is open and honest, and the relationship with parents is strong and transparent, complementing the effective educational provision which facilitates a deep understanding of the world beyond school.

The best way to discover everything on offer at Bancroft’s School prior to applying for a place is to visit them during their Open Events. These are typically held in the Summer and Autumn terms and comprise a rich range of activities, such as guided tours, presentations, demonstrations and meetings with staff.

The next stage of the admissions process includes registration. Online forms can be accessed through this page and should be submitted with a payment of a £125 registration fee. Please note that there is a deadline for applications, set in December of the year preceding entry.

The 11+ exam takes place the following January. Successful candidates will be invited to attend an interview later in the same month. Offer letters are sent by post in February and the closing date for acceptances is in March.

To assess pupils for 11+ entry, Bancroft’s School administers a paper-based exam and an online test called CEM Select.

The assessment will be divided into a series of highly time-pressured sections. Your child doesn’t necessarily need to complete all the questions in each section to do well.

The CEM Select will cover the following areas:

  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning
  • Numerical Reasoning

The Verbal Reasoning section of the test assesses your child’s ability to solve problems using words, with a special focus on depth and breadth of vocabulary.

The Non-Verbal Reasoning section requires your child to solve problems using shapes and patterns with a main focus on one specific question type.

The Numerical Reasoning section assesses your child’s ability to solve problems using numbers and arithmetic.
