Introduction
Barton Court Grammar School is a co-educational Academy of Excellence in Canterbury, Kent. Founded before World War II as the Canterbury Technical School for Girls, Barton Court Grammar has Foreign Language College status. [1]
The broad curriculum boosts knowledge and actively prepares students for further education. The teaching provision is superb, allowing pupils to engage in class and develop a deep understanding of the subject areas delivered, including mathematics, English, science, MFL, geography, history, PE, DT, music, art, drama, computing, RPE and careers education.

Barton Court Grammar School’s standard entry point is 11 Plus. However, the school also accepts applications from pupils interested in Mid-School (Late) Entry. To assess pupils for late transfer, Barton Court Grammar School administers the CAT4 online test and assessments for Maths and English.
The Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4) covers four subject areas, each of them evaluating pupils’ Reasoning skills though standardised assessments.
Barton Court Grammar School Mid-School Entry (12 Plus & 13 Plus) Admissions Information
These tests will be taken at Barton Court Grammar School. If you wish your child to be considered for the assessments, you should apply using the ‘In Year Common Application Form’.
In the event of the year group being oversubscribed, the school will give priority to:
- Children in Local Authority Care or who were previously in Local Authority Care.
- Children who receive ‘Pupil Premium’.
- Children whose siblings attend the school.
- Children facing particular medical, social and/or other circumstances.
- Children living nearest to the school.

As part of the assessment process for late transfer entry, your child will be asked to complete the CAT4 assessment.

The CAT4 assessment will cover Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, Spatial Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning.
- The Verbal Reasoning section examines problem-solving skills using words.
- The Non-Verbal Reasoning section covers problem-solving using shapes and patterns, rather than words.
- The Spatial Reasoning section assesses your child’s ability to identify shapes and how they change.
- The Quantitative Reasoning section tests their ability to solve problems using numbers.
