Established in 1923, Benenden School is an independent boarding school for girls. Located in Benenden, between Tenterden and Cranbrook, the school is surrounded by Kentish countryside. Benenden educates over 500 girls aged from 11 to 18. The school is the only full-time girls’ boarding school in the UK. Although the school itself is steeped in tradition, its teachings are modern and innovative.

How to Apply for 13 Plus Entry to Benenden School
As competition for 13 Plus entry to the school is very high, Benenden recommends that parents register their daughter at least four years in advance. The school often finds itself over-subscribed and has a waiting list system in place for such occasions.
In order to register for a place at the school, parents need to complete the Registration Form and return it alongside the student’s passport and a non-refundable deposit of £200. It should be noted, however, that registration does not guarantee a place at Benenden. Once students have been added to the provisional list, parents should notify the school of any changes in circumstance.
The Benenden School 13 Plus Pretest Assessment
As part of the 13+ admissions process, students are invited to attend a Preview Weekend, where they will stay overnight at the school. The aim of the Preview Weekend is to determine whether Benenden is a suitable match for the student, and the Headmistress will write to parents with feedback on their daughter’s stay.
Alongside the Preview Weekend, Benenden School uses the ISEB Common Pretest assessment to help them select students for 13 Plus entry.
This test covers four key subjects: English, Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. It is fully age-standardised and is designed to enable children to demonstrate their academic potential.
Benenden School Admissions Criteria
Should a student meet the required standard after the Preview Weekend and ISEB Common Pretest, a formal offer of an unconditional place will be sent by post to your daughter’s current school. The next step is to complete and return the Acceptance Form alongside the 30% security deposit.
Once the deposit has been received by the school, students are allocated houses, where they will be part of a group of girls with whom they will participate in school activities, events and sporting competitions. Before house allocations are made, students are given the opportunity to nominate a first, second, and third choice house. Prior to entry, all successful applicants are invited to the school during the summer term, to meet their Housemistress, or Housemaster, and fellow pupils.
How to Prepare for the Benenden School Pretest
Benenden uses the ISEB Common Entrance Pretest for 13 Plus entry. As this forms an important part of the assessment, we would recommend that students start preparing for the exam in good time.
At Pretest Plus, we specialise in helping students prepare for the ISEB Pretest, alongside other independent school entry exams. By utilising our resources, your daughter will become better acquainted with the exam layout and more familiar with the types of questions that she may be asked on the day.
Our practice tests and courses can also help identify your daughter’s strengths and weaknesses, enabling you to create a suitable study schedule, focused on improving her weaker areas. Similarly, the tests can also help improve time management skills, particularly when taken under exam conditions.
Our resources cover Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Once a test is complete, students and parents will have the opportunity to review the answers with detailed explanations provided for each question. Information on statistical averages is also provided.
