Introduction
Brighton Girls is an independent day school for girls aged 3-18. It comprises a Preschool/Pre-Prep for girls aged 3-7, a Prep School for girls aged 7-11, a Senior School for girls aged 11-16 and a Sixth Form for girls aged 16-18. As a member of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST), Brighton Girls tailors its education to suit its female students, playing to their strengths and enabling them to thrive.
Brighton Girls consistently achieves strong academic results. In 2024, around 59% of GCSE grades were in the 9-7 range, considerably above the national average, and 44% of A Level grades were A* or A. Unsurprisingly, school leavers secured places at a range of prestigious universities, including Oxford, York and Exeter.
Outside the classroom, girls can develop their talents and discover new passions by getting involved in the extensive extracurricular programme. Over 100 clubs and activities are available, including drama, boxing and coding. The school even has its own field centre in Wales, often used for school trips, where pupils can participate in canoeing, orienteering and climbing activities.
Wellbeing is a priority at Brighton Girls. The Head of Wellbeing is dedicated to ensuring pupils prioritise their mental health, arranging events to facilitate this, such as Zumba and laughter therapy. The school even holds a Wellbeing Week, designed to build girls’ confidence and encourage them to consider how social media affects their self-esteem.

Admissions Process for Year 7 Entry to Brighton Girls
The best way to start the admissions process is by visiting Brighton Girls to see if it is a good fit for your family. The school arranges various events, including open mornings, open days and weekly tours. A tour will enable you to learn more about the school’s ethos, experience its friendly environment, meet staff members and ask questions.
If you feel your daughter would thrive at Brighton Girls, you then have two routes you can take:
- You can apply for a place and have your daughter take entrance assessments when she is in Year 5. This is known as Early Doors entry.
- You can apply for a place and have your daughter take entrance assessments in Year 6. This is the Standard 11+ entry.
Early Doors Entry (Year 5)
For Brighton Girls Early Doors entry, you must complete an application by the end of February when your daughter is in Year 5 and pay the £120 non-refundable registration fee. Once the school has received your application, a staff member will request a reference from your daughter’s current school and arrange for her to be interviewed.
The interview will be conducted by a senior member of staff. They will be keen to find out more about your daughter to determine if she will flourish at Brighton Girls and make the most of all the school has to offer. Your daughter will be sent a written piece beforehand, which she will be expected to discuss at the interview. She will also be asked about her schoolwork and what she enjoys about school. Additionally, she must take a treasured possession to the interview and discuss it.
The entrance assessments will take place in mid-March of Year 5. They will comprise an online verbal reasoning test and an online non-verbal reasoning test, which are produced by Quest Admissions.
If your child performs well in the interview, excels in the online tests and has a glowing reference, you can expect her to be offered a place in Year 7 at Brighton Girls. Offers will be made at the end of March and must be accepted by the deadline in April of Year 5. At this point, a £500 acceptance deposit will be required. It is refunded when your daughter leaves Brighton Girls (minus any money owed).
Once you have accepted an offer, your daughter will be invited to various events and activities at Brighton Girls so that she starts to feel a part of the school community.
Standard 11+ Entry (Year 6)
For Brighton Girls Standard 11+ entry, you must complete an application form by the end of October when your daughter is in Year 6 and pay the £120 non-refundable registration fee. The entrance assessments will then take place in December of Year 6.
There will be an interview, and a reference will be requested from your daughter’s current school, just like for Early Doors entry.
The entrance assessments will include an online verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning test (Quest). Unlike for Early Doors, there will also be a maths paper and an English paper.
Offers will be sent out in January and must be accepted (with a £500 deposit) or declined by the deadline in early March. As with the Early Doors route, if you accept a place, your daughter will attend various events at Brighton Girls before starting there in Year 7.
Brighton Girls: Scholarships and Bursaries for Year 7 Entry
Scholarships
For Year 7 entry, scholarships are available in the following areas:
- Academic
- Art
- Dance
- Drama
- Music (including vocal)
- Sport (including skateboarding)
Academic scholarships are awarded to girls who perform exceptionally well in the entrance assessments in Year 6. If your daughter takes the Early Doors route and is offered a place at Brighton Girls, she can sit the 11+ English and maths papers in December of Year 6 if you want her to have the opportunity to be awarded an academic scholarship.
Assessments for all other scholarships take place in November of Year 6. For further details, please click here.
Bursaries
Bursaries, known as Brighton Awards, are offered to a few candidates who excel in the entrance assessments but whose families cannot afford the full fees. If you could only send your daughter to Brighton School if you received a Brighton Award, it is worth chatting with the Admissions Department at your earliest convenience.
If your annual household income is more than £102,000, it is highly unlikely that your daughter would be eligible for a bursary. The higher-value bursaries are typically awarded to girls whose families have an annual household income below £44,000.
Brighton Girls: Online Quest Entrance Assessments for Year 7 Entry
Whether your daughter takes the Early Doors or Standard 11+ route, she will sit online verbal and non-verbal reasoning tests produced by Quest Admissions.
Verbal Reasoning
The verbal reasoning assessment will require your daughter to solve problems using written information, such as letters and words. She will find this test easier if she has a mature vocabulary.
Non-Verbal Reasoning
The non-verbal reasoning assessment will have questions assessing your daughter’s ability to solve problems using visual information, such as pictures and diagrams. She might, for example, have to work out how a folded piece of paper with shapes cut out of it would look when it is unfolded.
The two tests are adaptive, meaning your daughter will face more challenging questions if she keeps answering correctly. If she starts to answer incorrectly, the questions won’t get more difficult. The idea is that each candidate will answer questions that are at an appropriate level for them.
Do not worry if your child is one of the younger candidates — scores are age-standardised.
Also, do not worry whether your daughter takes the tests in Year 5 or Year 6 — the tests for Year 5 candidates will be appropriate for 10+, and the tests for Year 6 candidates will be appropriate for 11+.
Tips to Help Your Child Prepare for the Online Quest Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning Assessments
We have put together the following tips for preparing for the Brighton Girls online verbal and non-verbal reasoning assessments:
- Encourage your daughter to read widely. Reading a variety of texts will expand your daughter’s vocabulary and improve her ability to interpret written language, which are crucial skills for the verbal reasoning test.
- Play with building bricks. Constructing different structures with building bricks will help your child’s visualisation skills, proving beneficial for the non-verbal reasoning test.
- Keep study sessions short. A ten-year-old can typically focus for around 20-30 minutes at a time, so avoid lengthy study sessions.
- Schedule plenty of breaks. Regular breaks will give your daughter time to absorb the information she has been looking at and return refreshed. It’s amazing how often something clicks into place when you step away for a while.
- Promote a growth mindset. A growth mindset is the belief that we can all improve our skills through hard work. If your daughter knows that her abilities will improve with time and effort, it will keep her motivated and positive. Celebrate all her successes, no matter how small, and teach her that mistakes are all part of the learning process.
- Adopt a healthy lifestyle. Eating well, getting sufficient sleep and exercising regularly are good for your daughter’s general wellbeing, helping her manage the preparation process and the entrance assessments calmly.
- Use online practice tests. Using our online practice tests will familiarise your daughter with what to expect on her assessment day, removing any fear of the unknown. She can practise the types of questions that will come up, get used to working under time pressure and be confident that she can competently navigate the online format. Additionally, she can use the answers and explanations we provide to learn from her mistakes, leading to fewer errors, if any, on the day.
