Once a student has been registered, the school will contact parents to confirm that they wish for their child to sit the Students that meet the required standard are invited to the school’s pre-assessment day in either Year 6, or Year 7. The assessment day includes tests, informal interviews and a range of activities. Canford school also requests a reference from the students’ current prep school. The exact assessment dates are published on the school’s website, alongside the closing date for applications.
It should be noted that an invitation to sit the pretest exam is not a guarantee of a place at Canford. The school reports that in recent years, around 65% of pupils who attend the Headmaster’s List assessments were offered conditional places.
Canford School Admissions Criteria
As an academically selective school, 13 Plus admission to Canford is based on academic merit, assessed through an entrance examination, an interview and a reference from the candidate’s current prep school. In Year 8, all candidates that have been offered a conditional place are required to sit either the Academic Scholarship examination, the Common Entrance Examination, or the Canford Entrance Tests. The school states that its selection process is designed to identify students that will benefit from what the school has to offer, regardless of needs and background.
Students are able to specify their preferred House at any point during the admission process and, in Year 7, parents are invited to meet Housemasters and Housemistresses. Canford’s house preference form can be downloaded from the school’s website, here.
How to Prepare for the Canford School Pretest
Taking the time to prepare students for Canford School’s 13 Plus pretest exam is worthwhile. Students that have experience of answering the types of questions that may come up in the pretest will have a competitive advantage over others.
At Pretest Plus, we publish online pretest practice tests and courses that are designed to help students prepare for independent school pretests. They help students familiarise themselves with the layout of the pretest assessment. They also provide students with an insight into the types of questions that they’re likely to be asked on the day.
If introduced early into a child’s revision schedule, online practice tests and courses can help identify any weak areas in their knowledge and understanding. As a student’s revision progresses, our they can also be a great way to monitor their progress, enabling parents to adjust their child’s revision plan to suit.
As the pretest assessment draws closer, we’d encourage students to take our online tests under exam conditions to get them used to answering questions quickly and under pressure. The more practice tests children take in the lead up to the pretest, the better their time managements skills will become.
Our resources are an excellent way for students to prepare for the Canford pretest. They cover each of the four subjects tested in the exam: Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, Maths and English. After completing a test, students will be provided with instant feedback on their score, and they will have the opportunity to read detailed explanations of each answer. Our tests also provide information on statistical averages to give an indication of relative performance.
