Introduction

Cheltenham Ladies’ College (CLC) is a highly prestigious educational establishment for girls aged 11-18, offering day and boarding places. It was established in 1853 to provide an excellent academic education to girls. Starting with just 82 pupils, most of whom did not board, today CLC has over 800 pupils, with the majority being boarders.

The school has incredible facilities, including squash courts, a swimming pool, a climbing wall and a gym, enabling girls to stay fit and lead vibrant lives outside the classroom. If your daughter is interested in drama, you will be pleased to know that CLC also has an arts centre that houses a theatre and rehearsal rooms.

Academically, CLC is superb. The school’s most recent ISI report highlights pupils’ excellent academic progress and the outstanding results achieved in public exams. The results are a testament to the first-class teaching and hard-working students.

Pupil well-being is at the heart of school life. Girls are taught the importance of looking after themselves in all areas of their lives. They know the potential dangers of social media and how to stay safe online. They also understand the importance of eating healthily and exercising, knowing that this contributes to their overall well-being.

Admissions Process for 11 Plus (LC1) Entry

It is highly advisable to visit Cheltenham Ladies’ College with your daughter before registering for a place in Year 7 (LC1). This will allow you to see if CLC is the right place for her.

Registering is the next step. You should complete the standard registration form if you are not applying for a bursary and the bursary registration form if you are. Either way, you need to do this by the beginning of July when your daughter is in Year 5. A registration fee must be paid if you are not applying for a bursary.

Additionally, you must fill out an entrance exam form by the beginning of August after your child has finished Year 5. You will be sent this form.

Assessment Day will take place in October of Year 6 and will comprise the following:

  • An online Quest test with maths, problem-solving and verbal reasoning modules.
  • An English comprehension and text analysis.
  • Group activities and interviews

Cheltenham Ladies’ College will also review a reference from your child’s current school as part of the admissions process.

In November of Year 6, you will hear whether your daughter has been offered a place. If she has, you need to accept it by the deadline in March of Year 6. At this point, you will need to pay an acceptance fee and deposit.

Cheltenham Ladies’ College: Scholarships and Bursaries for Year 7/LC1 Entry

Scholarships

Academic and music scholarships are available for Year 7 (LC1) entry.

You do not apply for an academic scholarship. The school will invite girls who excel in the entrance assessments to attend further testing and interviews in February of Year 6 to select academic scholars.

Music scholarship application forms should be submitted by the beginning of October of Year 6. If you apply for a music scholarship, your daughter’s musical ability will be assessed in February of Year 6.

Please be aware that scholarships do not include fee remission but offer many benefits, such as free music tuition and bespoke concerts for music scholars.

Bursaries

The bursaries are known as Beale Awards (named after the school’s second headteacher). They are designed to enable gifted girls whose parents cannot afford the fees to attend Cheltenham Ladies’ College. They are means-tested, so your financial situation, including household income and assets, will be examined if you apply for a bursary. The financial support can vary from 1% to 100% of the fees.

Only a limited number are available. If you are awarded a bursary, it will be reviewed annually and may change in value depending on any change in your financial circumstances.

Cheltenham Ladies’ College: Quest Online Assessment for Year 7/LC1 Entry

The Quest online assessment has maths, problem-solving and verbal reasoning modules.

  • The maths section will cover what your daughter has been taught at school, i.e. topics covered by the KS2 national curriculum (statistics, geometry, arithmetic, number and measurement). Some questions will involve more than one step and will test your daughter’s reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • The problem-solving section will use interactive puzzles to assess your daughter’s reasoning and problem-solving skills. She will need to show her resilience when working through each puzzle.
  • The verbal reasoning section will evaluate how well your daughter can solve problems using written information, such as letters and words. A wide vocabulary is an asset for these questions.

You will undoubtedly want your daughter to feel fully prepared for the online assessment. Please look at our top tips to help ensure she is ready for this competitive test.

Top Tips for Preparing for Cheltenham Ladies’ College 11 Plus (11+)/LC1 Online Quest Assessment

To perform to the best of her ability in Cheltenham Ladies’ College online assessment, your daughter must feel calm and confident on the day. There are many ways to help her achieve success:

  • Ensure she gets plenty of sleep, exercise, healthy food and time to have fun. These things will help her maintain her well-being, which is crucial for success.
  • Keep study sessions short. Children can only concentrate for relatively short periods at a time (about 30 minutes), so long sessions are not advantageous when it comes to retaining information.
  • Stay positive. Your daughter will take her lead from how you are feeling. If you stay positive, she will have a positive mindset and be more likely to excel.
  • Praise her for the time and effort she puts in so that she stays motivated.
  • Begin preparation well before the assessment day so you can take a measured approach. Also, it will give you plenty of time to work on any areas your daughter finds problematic.

Cheltenham Ladies’ College 11 Plus (11+)/LC1 Quest Online Assessment Practice Tests

Our practice tests are a great resource to use for many reasons, including the following:

  • They closely resemble the actual online assessment, meaning they will help your daughter get used to the types of questions she will face, the timings of the online exam and the format. Knowing what to expect will allow her to approach the online entrance exam with confidence.
  • They will enable your daughter to practise taking tests online. She will become confident about navigating an online test, including moving between onscreen questions and written workings.
  • They come with answers and explanations, meaning your daughter can learn from any mistakes she makes. This will prevent her from making similar errors in the actual test, leading to a higher score.

Working through our online practice tests will help give your daughter an advantage over other candidates, which is crucial when competition for places is high.
