Introduction

City of London School, also known as City or CLS, is a prestigious independent school for boys located in the heart of the country’s capital. A top-performing institution, CLS boasts a long and impressive list of notable alumni, including a Nobel Prize-winning theoretical physicist, a distinguished structural engineer and a number of politicians and philosophers. [1]

Aimed at maximising pupils’ creative and independent thought, City offers a forward-looking curriculum. Subjects range from science and computing to MFL and CLaSS, the latter referring to the school’s bespoke Core Learning and Survival Skills course. The teaching provision helps boys grow in intellectual curiosity by encouraging research and inquisitiveness in the classroom, placing personalised attention at the centre of its philosophy.

The co-curricular offering is as extensive as it gets, encompassing numerous clubs and societies alongside trips and community-related pursuits. Recent destinations have included Nepal, Cuba, China, Spain and Ecuador, allowing the cohort to explore their cultural understanding in a breathtaking setting, where they can also familiarise themselves with different lifestyles and develop firm friendships. [2]

The facilities on offer showcase the school’s distinguished reputation among local establishments. With a 25-metre swimming pool, a 4G artificial grass football pitch, six tennis courts and ten smaller football pitches, the campus fully accommodates students’ needs, making their learning experiences as memorable as they are relevant. [3]

City aspires to be a school that equips respectful, optimistic and enthusiastic pupils for the swiftly evolving demands of the twenty-first century. Education there is understood in the broadest sense, melding academic excellence with unparalleled pastoral care, and fostering the holistic development of children by encouraging them to make a positive difference in the world they inhabit, despite its often daunting complexities.

City of London School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions Process

City is an academically selective school and prospective families are strongly encouraged to attend its open events prior to applying for a place. These typically take place in the Autumn term (September and October) and include a guided tour of the facilities and meetings with key members of staff.

All students must be registered for the 11 Plus exam prior to the November deadline. The exam takes place in December, assessing pupils’ skills using an online test and a creative writing task. Successful candidates will be invited back to the school later in the same month to take Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning assessments. Interviews are held in January.

If your son qualifies for entry to CLS, he will be offered a place in February, to be accepted by the March deadline. On acceptance, you will be asked to pay a deposit, refunded at the end of your son’s career at City.

To gifted 11+ applicants, the school offers Scholarships and Prizes valued at £35. Those awarded a Scholarship or Prize may also qualify for a bursary covering up to 100% of fees. Academic Prizes are offered on the basis of entrance exam results and an interview, at which students are expected to showcase high academic promise without specific preparation.

Music Scholarships, valid until the end of Year 11, are granted based on auditions, an interview and academic achievement. They cover all orchestral instruments. Singers must be able to play an instrument, since voice cannot be offered as a first study. A Grade 5 proficiency is required for piano and strings. Besides the scholarship’s monetary value, recipients will also get free lessons on two instruments.

Sports Prizes are awarded to skilled team players, particularly in football. These prizes are granted after a sports trial, given the academic criteria are met. Prize recipients get funds from the Sports Prize Fund and are expected to represent the school and actively participate in its sports programmes year-round.

Small bursaries can be awarded to families with a net household income of £70,000 per annum. Full bursaries, which cover 100% of fees, are available to families with limited assets whose joint net income is less than £45,000 per annum. There are a restricted number of bursaries available though, due to the limited financial resources of the school. Please note that your son’s performance throughout the admissions process will also be taken into consideration. More details are available here
