Introduction

Located in the tranquil village of Cranleigh in Surrey, Cranleigh School is an independent day and boarding school that teaches both boys and girls. It opened in 1865 and has educated an array of notable alumni ever since, aligning its provision with the motto Ex Cultu Robur (from culture comes strength). [1]

Students are offered a broad curriculum that comprises 17 subjects, designed to foster intellectual growth and expand their learning horizons. Ranging from humanities and mathematics to natural sciences and technology, the academic offerings inspire curiosity and inquisitiveness in the classroom, encouraging pupils to think and question instead of simply memorising facts.

Outside the traditional classroom setting, students enjoy a rich and engaging co-curricular programme, encompassing genuinely enjoyable activities. A special focus is placed on outdoor education within the breathtaking natural environment, which helps to facilitate experiences that are not only exhilarating but also instrumental in enhancing vital life skills. [2]

The most recent ISI report for the school states that Cranleigh successfully meets all the national criteria for top-quality independent education. Pupils’ learning and behaviour are described as exemplary, underpinned by a robust moral understanding that clearly distinguishes right from wrong.

School trivia: Cranleigh’s Blaker Society, named after an Old Cranleighan, offers students an insightful journey into the evolution of Western art, spanning from the Renaissance era to Modern times. This experience enables pupils to trace the artistic progression from Giotto to Picasso, opening up a fascinating world of art that they are likely to cherish and enjoy for many years to come.

Cranleigh School 13 Plus (13+) Admissions Process

The school hosts open events throughout the year, and attending one is considered a vital step in the admissions process. Welcome Mornings provide prospective families with the opportunity to explore the facilities and get a feel for life on campus. For a more tailored experience, the school is open to scheduling personal tours. Click here to learn more.

The next step in the admissions process includes registering with the school. Please note that the online form must be submitted with a payment of a £200 registration fee. Ideally, your child should be registered with the school while they are in Year 4 or 5.

All registered applicants will sit an online test between October and mid-November while they are in Year 6. There will also be further assessments in January of Year 6, during which your child will participate in team-building activities, attend an interview, complete a creative writing paper and take part in a discussion group. Based on performance in the Autumn online test and January assessment day, as well as a positive reference from their current school, your child may receive an offer of a place.

In Year 8, your child will undertake an additional examination, typically conducted at their current school, the results of which will be used for setting purposes.

To talented and promising 13+ applicants, the school offers scholarships in the following categories:

⦿ Academic ability, All-round ability, Art, Design, Drama, Sport, Performing Arts and Music

These can be applied for in the Autumn term of Year 8.

Academic scholarships are offered based on performance in scholarship exams covering English, Maths, Science, MFL, Geography, History, Latin, Greek and Religious Studies. Additionally, applicants will participate in a discussion group and individual interviews to assess their broader potential.

13+ Art scholarship applicants will be asked to produce a piece of mixed-media work on paper, based on an observation of a chosen subject, often a themed still life. There will also be an interview. Music scholarship candidates will take part in an audition and should perform at Grade 5/6 standard on at least one instrument. The school also offers Head’s Awards for all-round ability. If you require financial assistance with paying the fees, you may be eligible for a means-tested bursary. Candidates seeking scholarships who also need further financial support are advised to reach out to the admissions team at the earliest opportunity.

Please note that as part of the means test, you must complete forms detailing your financial circumstances. This process allows Cranleigh to provide an initial estimate of the potential bursary size you might be offered if your child receives an award.
