Introduction
Cranmore School is a Catholic independent school for pupils aged 2-18 that welcomes pupils of all faiths and those of no faith too. The school is co-educational until the end of Year 2, and there will be a co-educational Sixth Form from September 2025. Years 3-11 are for boys only. In 2019, Cranmore School joined forces with St Teresa’s to form the Effingham Schools Trust partnership, enabling this co-curricular provision to happen, as the schools could enrich their pupils’ educational journeys through shared events, facilities and resources. In 2023, Manor House joined the partnership.
Specialist teachers in the Senior School ensure that lessons are engaging and help boys develop into independent and curious learners. The aim is to ensure that all pupils reach their full academic potential and genuinely enjoy learning.
Extra-curricular provision at Cranmore School is exemplary and extensive. Activities currently on offer include chess, hockey, water polo, drama, board games and judo, to name but a few. Pupils are encouraged to get involved so that they can grow into accomplished, confident and resilient young adults.
The well-being of students is at the heart of everything Cranmore School does. Its caring Christian community helps pupils feel happy and safe, with everyone expected to be kind, respectful and not just to tolerate difference but to celebrate it. Furthermore, the pastoral staff and school nurse are always ready to offer guidance and support to any pupil experiencing difficulties.
Cranmore School: Admissions Process for 11 Plus (11+)/Year 7 Entry
Attending an Open Morning (held in May and September) is a great way to find out more about Cranmore School. You can also arrange an individual tour and a meeting with the Head.
If you decide Cranmore School is the right place for your son, you will need to fill out the registration form by the deadline in October of the year before entry, i.e. when your son is in Year 6. You will also need to pay the non-refundable registration fee.
Your son will then need to sit the ISEB Common Pre-test before the deadline in November of Year 6. If possible, he should sit it at his current school. If this is not possible, he can sit it at Cranmore School.
In addition to the ISEB Common Pre-test, all candidates will be invited to spend time at Cranmore School in November of Year 6. They will get to experience what life is like at Cranmore School, take part in some fun activities, be interviewed as part of a group and complete a creative writing exercise.
A confidential report from the Head of your child’s current school will also be looked at as part of the admissions process.
Offers will be made in early December of Year 6, and those who have received an offer will be invited to an Offer Holders’ Day the following term. Accepting an offer will involve paying a deposit, which is refunded when your son leaves Cranmore School or is offset against his last term’s expenses.
Cranmore School: Scholarships and Bursaries
The following scholarships are available for 11+ entry:
- Academic

The other scholarships will be awarded based on performance in assessments that take place at the end of November of Year 6.
If you are unable to afford the school’s fees but think your son would benefit from an education at Cranmore School, you can apply for a means-tested bursary, which will mean your financial situation will be thoroughly assessed. Please be aware that only a limited number of bursaries are available. You can email [email protected] for more information.

To join in Year 7, your son will be asked to complete an online assessment called the ISEB Common Pre-test, which assesses skills in English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The test provides a universal and standardised measure of attainment, ability and potential.
You will need to register your son for the ISEB Pre-test on the official ISEB website.
Please note that the ISEB Common Pre-test can only be sat once in an academic year. If your son is sitting the test for more than one school, all the schools he has applied for will receive his results.
Cranmore School: 11 Plus (11+)/Year 7 ISEB Common Pre-Test Exam Format
The ISEB Pre-test assessment comprises multiple-choice questions covering the following areas:
- English (40 minutes) – evaluates reading comprehension and grammar (using cloze sentences, shuffled sentences and SPaG question types).
- Mathematics (40 minutes) – measures mathematical ability relative to the national curriculum stage.
- Verbal Reasoning (25 minutes) – tests thinking and the ability to solve problems using words.
- Non-Verbal Reasoning (30 minutes) – assesses thinking with shapes, space, diagrams and pictures.
In total, the four parts of the ISEB Common Pre-test take 2 hours and 15 minutes to administer and complete. There is no audio component to any of the tests.
Preparing for the Cranmore School ISEB Common Pre-Test for 11 Plus (11+)/Year 7 Entry
Here at Pretest Plus, we have, after painstaking research, created Practice Tests for the ISEB Common Pre-test. They are an invaluable resource for your son to work through before he sits the online ISEB Common Pre-test, helping him in the following ways:
- He will get plenty of practice taking online tests.
- He will get used to moving between online questions and his paper-based workings.
- The Practice Tests have the same question types, modules and format as the real test, meaning your son will know what to expect on the day. This will help him feel relaxed and confident, which will lead to a more polished performance.
- The Practice Tests will enable your son to get used to the timings of the actual test. He will gain a deep understanding of the speed he needs to work at and, as he works his way through the Practice Tests, he will get more proficient at working quickly and accurately.
- He can use the answers and explanations that are provided with the Practice Tests to learn from any mistakes he makes. This will result in fewer mistakes being made on the day.
