Introduction

Founded in 1619, Dulwich College is an independent day and boarding school for boys in Dulwich, London. It is a member of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference and has campuses in Singapore, China and South Korea. [1]

Dulwich offers a truly gratifying educational experience, underpinned by a balanced curriculum that comprises DT, science, IT, politics, Classics and humanities, among others. The in-class environment strongly encourages healthy competition and inquisitiveness, providing boys with the opportunity to explore and discuss various concepts as part of the broad spectrum of learning areas.

Within the scope of the co-curricular offering, pupils effortlessly acquire new skills in line with their current interests, catered for upon demand through the provision of over 50 activities. Among these, CCF and the Duke of Edinburgh Award enjoy vast popularity, maximising boys’ resourcefulness in parallel with their leadership qualities and agency. [2

Dulwich College does more than just prepare pupils for public examinations: it provides free thinkers with a safe haven, allowing them to question existing knowledge and the common understanding of the world they inhabit. Typically employing an interdisciplinary approach to learning and a positive mindset in the midst of difficulty, Dulwich boys are not afraid of failure, as they know it holds many valuable lessons.

13 Plus (13+) Admissions Process at Dulwich College

The first step of the admissions process includes a visit to the school, which you and your child should attend prior to applying for a place. Open Afternoons typically include an address from the Head and a tour of facilities.

Following the visit, you may wish to register your child for Year 9 entry by completing the online form and paying the £150 registration fee.

The entrance procedure includes examinations and an interview, taking place in January and February of the calendar year of entry, respectively.

If your son receives an offer of a place, you will be asked to accept it with a payment of a deposit, £1,900 for day pupils and £3,800 for boarders.

To assess pupils for 13+ entry, Dulwich College administers papers in Maths and English and an online Reasoning exam similar to CAT4.

Dulwich College » 13+ Entry, Online Reasoning Exam (CAT4)

To join in Year 9, your child will be asked to complete an online assessment similar to the Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4), which assesses Verbal, Non-Verbal, Spatial and Quantitative Reasoning. Here’s a brief introduction to the four subjects covered in this online exam:

Verbal Reasoning

The Verbal Reasoning part of the CAT4 test requires your child to solve problems using words. They will be asked questions based on identifying verbal similarities and analogies.

Non-Verbal Reasoning

The Non-Verbal Reasoning part of the CAT4 test requires your child to solve problems using shapes and patterns, rather than with words. They will be asked questions based on matrices and identifying similarities.

Spatial Reasoning

The Spatial Reasoning part of the CAT4 test assesses your child’s ability to identify shapes and how they change. They will be asked questions based on recognising target shapes or visualising how unfolded pieces of paper will look.

Quantitative Reasoning

The Quantitative Reasoning part of the CAT4 test assesses your child’s ability to solve problems using numbers. They will be asked questions based on sequences and relationships between numbers.
