Introduction
Felsted School is a co-educational independent school for pupils aged 4 to 18, including a Prep School for Years 3 to 8. Boarding is available from Year 5. Felsted benefits from a beautiful rural location while being only an hour from London and Cambridge.
A broad curriculum taught by enthusiastic, dedicated teachers ensures that pupils can reach their full academic potential, with an emphasis on pupils developing critical-thinking skills rather than passively absorbing information. Small class sizes mean teaching can be tailored to meet each child’s needs.
The co-curricular programme at Felsted School is impressive. Whatever a child’s passions and interests are, they will find clubs and societies that excite them, helping them to enhance their talents, make new friends and have fun.
Pastoral care is a priority at Felsted. All pupils are taught strategies to support their mental wellbeing and know they can access the Wellbeing Centre when necessary. Yoga, mindfulness lessons and peer counselling all help pupils maintain good mental health, and staff are on hand to offer additional support when needed.

The next step is to fill out the online registration form, pay the registration fee and send a copy of your child’s most recent school report to Felsted School.
Your child will then sit an online Quest assessment and be interviewed by the Head or Deputy Head. Additionally, Felsted School will request a reference from your child’s current school.

Felsted Prep School: Online Quest Entrance Exam for Year 7 Entry
Your child will sit a bespoke online entrance test produced by Quest for Year 7 entry to Felsted Prep School. The test will comprise four sections:
- Maths: Your child can expect questions that cover geometry, measurement, numbers, statistics and arithmetic, all within the Year 5 mathematics curriculum. Your child’s mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills will be tested, and they will need to answer some multi-step questions.
- English: Your child’s reading skills will be assessed using questions on a passage that could be fiction or non-fiction. They must demonstrate that they can understand the passage and make inferences. Your child will also likely face questions that test the standard of their spelling, punctuation and grammar.
- Verbal Reasoning: Your child’s problem-solving skills using written information, such as letters and words, will be evaluated. They might, for example, have to select the two words that are closest in meaning from two groups of words by selecting one word from each group.
- Non-Verbal Reasoning: Your child’s ability to solve problems using visual information, such as pictures and diagrams, will be determined. They might, for example, have to work out which pictured set of blocks could be used to build a given shape.
The test is adaptive. If your child answers questions correctly, the next ones will become more challenging; if not, they will be easier. This keeps the test at the right level for them.
Felsted Prep School: Online Quest Assessment for Year 7 Entry Academic Scholarships
Your child will sit a bespoke online assessment produced by Quest if they have applied for an Academic scholarship and already demonstrated exceptional academic ability. The test will comprise two sections:
- Puzzles and Problem-Solving: Your child must answer questions that involve interactive puzzles. They will need to use their resilience to work out the answers methodically, showing that they can focus on tasks.
- Creative Comprehension: Your child will use several sources, such as a map, a diary entry and a graph, on a common theme to answer questions. Some questions will require them to consider more than one source at a time.
This test is not adaptive, so your child will answer the same questions as everyone else. However, your child may work their way through more questions than others do. The aim is to work quickly while maintaining accuracy.

Tips to Help Your Child Prepare for the Felsted Prep School Year 7 Entrance Exam and Academic Scholarship Test
Felsted School is a highly regarded educational establishment, so demand for places outstrips supply. Being fully prepared for the entrance exam and, if relevant, the Academic scholarship exam will give your child the skills and confidence needed to perform to the best of their ability.
We understand that it can be hard to know how best to support your child through the preparation process, so we have compiled the following tips for you:
- Start study sessions early: Scheduling them well in advance of the assessments will reduce stress because your child will know they have the time they need to prepare and won’t need to panic or have last-minute cramming sessions.
- Keep study sessions short: Typically, children can study effectively for 2-3 minutes per year of their age. This means long study sessions are not effective.
- Adopt a healthy lifestyle: Eating healthily, exercising regularly and sleeping well will all help your child cope with the demands of the preparation process.
- Ensure there is time to relax and have fun: Having time to recharge will make the preparation process feel manageable, making it a part of your child’s life rather than taking it over.
- Embrace a growth mindset: Teach your child that we can all improve our skills through hard work and determination. Praise them for their efforts and achievements, and remind them that mistakes are an opportunity to grow.
- Read a wide range of books: Reading is a fantastic way for your child to improve their reading comprehension, widen their vocabulary and enhance their spelling, punctuation and grammar. It is also an ideal way to wind down before bedtime.
- Revise Year 5 schoolwork: Going over their Year 5 maths and English schoolwork will ensure they are not at a disadvantage when they encounter questions that assume knowledge of the Year 5 curriculum.
- Use practice tests: Our accurate practice tests will help your child understand what to expect in Felsted Prep School’s 11+ Quest assessments. Becoming familiar with the question types, format and timings will build their confidence. Also, they can use the answers and explanations we provide to improve their skills and deliver a polished performance when it counts.
