Introduction
Gateways School is an independent co-educational school for pupils aged 2-18. It was founded in 1941 in a converted house in Alwoodley in Leeds. The founders, Miss Simpson and Miss Cox, opened it to educate local children so their parents didn’t have to send them away during wartime. In 1947, with the school growing, it moved to the Harewood Estate. Since then, it has continued to expand.
The High School is for pupils aged 11-16. Small class sizes mean pupils get plenty of attention, making the teaching extremely effective. In Years 7-9, the curriculum is broad and balanced and includes traditional subjects, such as English, maths and chemistry, as well as non-traditional subjects, such as textiles, drama and PSHE.
The extra-curricular provision at Gateways is superb. Pupils are encouraged to make the most of the activities on offer, which include hockey, karate, choir and chess. They are also taught to be compassionate, responsible citizens through the Community Outreach Programme, supporting a variety of charities.
Pastoral care at Gateways is taken very seriously, with the school recognising that children need to feel happy and safe to thrive academically and personally. Tutors form strong relationships with their pupils, enabling them to offer appropriate support and guidance. Additionally, the school has a counsellor who can help pupils develop strategies to navigate their way through any difficulties they may experience.
Gateways School: Admissions Process for 11 Plus (11+)/Year 7/Upper 3 Entry
Gateways recommends that you arrange a personal visit to the school before registering your child for a place. Visiting will enable you to learn more about the school and meet the Head of the High School. Alternatively, you can attend the Open Day, typically held in October.
If you decide Gateways is the right school for your child, you should fill out the online registration form, pay the £75 registration fee and send a copy of your child’s latest school report. The deadline is in December of Year 6, although you are advised to register early.
In January of Year 6, your child will attend an Entrance & Scholarship Assessment Day at Gateways. They will sit a bespoke online test that covers English, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning.
Gateways will normally send out offers the day after the Assessment Day. If your child receives an offer, you should respond quickly, as places are secured on a first-come, first-served basis. You will need to pay a non-refundable £500 commitment fee.
Gateways School: 11 Plus (11+)/Year 7 (Upper 3) Scholarships and Bursaries
For Year 7 entry, Gateways School offers the following types of scholarships:
- Academic
- Arts
- Sports
They can be worth up to 25% of the school’s fees, and candidates can apply for more than one. Academic scholarships will be awarded based on how candidates perform in the bespoke online test. The other scholarships are assessed separately on Assessment Day.
Bursaries are means-tested awards designed to help families who are going through financial difficulties. Pupils can receive both a scholarship and a bursary.
