Introduction

Gateways School is an independent school located in Harewood, West Yorkshire. Gateways Nursery, Early Years and Prep School are coeducational, but Gateways High School is girls-only. The school provides pupils with an academically stimulating environment in which students can develop into mature and confident young adults.

Pupils are actively encouraged to take part in a wide range of extracurricular activities including sports, music, drama and community outreach.

How to Apply for 11 Plus Entry to Gateways School

Before applying for a Year 7 place at Gateways School, parents are advised to book a visit or attend its open day. During the visit, parents and students can take a tour of the school, meet current pupils and talk to members of staff.

Parents who would like to register their child for a Year 7 place should complete the online registration form. At this point, parents must pay a registration fee of £75 and provide the most recent copy of their child’s school report. As the school keeps its class sizes small, it’s recommended that all pupils register early to secure a place.

Gateways School 11 Plus Pretest Assessment

Pupils applying for a Year 7 place at Gateways High School are required to sit the ISEB Common Pretest. The Pretest covers English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning. It is an age-standardised computerised test that is designed to measure a student’s academic ability. Unlike other independent schools, Gateways is non-selective and uses the exam to highlight any strengths or weaknesses a child might have in order to ensure that Gateways is the most supportive environment.

An entrance exam day takes place every year towards the end of January. On this day, children may also meet with a senior member of staff for an informal interview.

Once an offer has been made, a commitment fee of £200 is payable in order to accept the offer of a place.

Gateways School Admissions Criteria

Gateways School is unusual in the sense that it uses an entrance exam, but is non-selective. Rather than being used to rank pupils, the exam is intended to highlight any strengths or weaknesses a child might have. The school retains the right to suggest an alternative learning environment for children if they believe Gateways is not the right school for them.

The Year 7 assessment process combines the measuring of academic attainment and potential as well as gauging the extent to which the prospective pupil will benefit from joining the school.

How to Prepare for the Gateways School Pretest

If your child is set to take the ISEB Common Pretest, we recommend getting organised and preparing them well. One of the most effective ways to gauge your child’s current attainment level is to use online pretest practice tests and courses.

Our practice tests are all pitched at the same difficulty level, which allows you to accurately measure your child’s progress over time. Each practice test includes modules covering Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, Maths and English. After each module is complete, students and parents can refer to detailed explanations for each question.

The tests and courses provide statistical averages to provide an indication of relative performance.
