Introduction

GEMS Wellington School, Qatar (WSQ), an international co-educational establishment for pupils aged 3-18, offers students an education based on the English national curriculum. The school has first-class facilities, including a dance studio, libraries, a food technology room and a multipurpose sports hall.

Dedicated staff have high expectations of pupils and encourage them to be active learners who ask questions. The aim is for pupils to develop a lifelong love of learning and be equipped for life in the twenty-first century. Results in public exams are impressive, with school leavers accessing prestigious universities.

A wide range of extra-curricular activities, such as ukulele, video editing and boxing, enables pupils to have fun and forge new friendships while enhancing skills and discovering new talents. Older students can also sign up for the Duke of Edinburgh International Award, working through the bronze, silver and gold levels.

WSQ prides itself on providing pupils with exemplary pastoral care, aiming for the school environment to be one in which every student can thrive.

The CAT4 for Admission to Years 3-13 at GEMS Wellington School, Qatar

The CAT4 comprises multiple-choice questions that cover four areas:

  1. The verbal reasoning questions will assess how well your child can interpret language and reason with words. They may, for example, be given five words and have to select the word that does not belong with the others.
  2. The non-verbal reasoning questions will evaluate your child’s ability to analyse shapes to solve problems. They may, for example, have to select the shape that completes a set of shapes.
  3. The quantitative reasoning paper will assess your child’s problem-solving skills using numbers. They may, for example, have to find the next number in a series.
  4. The spatial reasoning paper will require your child to solve problems by mentally moving shapes around. They may, for example, have to imagine what a folded piece of paper with holes in it will look like when it is unfolded.

The CAT4 has different levels for different year groups. Typically, schools use the following levels:

Level X for candidates in Year 2

Level Y for candidates in Year 3

Level A for candidates in Year 4

Level B for candidates in Year 5

Level C for candidates in Year 6

Level D for candidates in Year 7

Level E for candidates in Year 8

Level F for candidates in Year 9 or 10

Level G for candidates in Year 11 or 12

Preparing for the GEMS Wellington School CAT4 for Admission to Years 3-13

It is crucial that your child is fully prepared for the CAT4 so that they can perform to the best of their ability. We have the following tips that could prove valuable for the preparation process:

  1. A healthy lifestyle will support your child’s emotional and physical well-being. It is much easier to concentrate after a good night’s sleep, and regular exercise can reduce stress. Combined with a healthy diet, your child will be better equipped to cope with both preparation and the entrance exam.
  2. Remember that short study sessions are better than lengthy ones, as children can only concentrate effectively for short periods. If you start preparation months before the entrance test, you can go for a ‘little and often’ approach.
  3. Teach your child to have a growth mindset so they feel motivated, knowing that their abilities will improve if they are willing to put in time and effort and that mistakes are not setbacks but opportunities to learn.
  4. Encourage your child to read widely. Reading will expand their vocabulary and ability to understand written language, which will be highly beneficial for the verbal reasoning questions.
  5. Use practice tests so your child knows what to expect in the CAT4. We have produced CAT4 practice tests after careful research to ensure they accurately mirror the actual CAT4. Your child can work their way through our tests to become familiar with the layout, timings and question types. They will find that, over time, they become quicker at answering questions correctly. Also, they won’t waste time trying to understand unfamiliar questions on the assessment day. Instead, they will feel confident and be able to work their way calmly through the test.
