Introduction
Holmwood House School is a co-ed day and boarding school in Colchester, Essex. A small school with a strong ethos, it successfully combines innovation and tradition, producing competitive academic and non-academic results in the process. [1]

To help parents and their children decide whether the school is a good fit, Holmwood House hosts Open Days in Spring and Autumn. The events offer the ideal opportunity to learn more about the school’s provision, meet key members of the staff and tour the school’s premises.
The next step of the admissions process includes registration, which must be accompanied by a payment of a £50 registration fee. The entrance examinations are typically held in November of Year 6, broadly assessing pupils’ skills using an online test.
Offers of places are made in December. Please note that, on acceptance, you will be asked to pay a deposit, refunded during your child’s last term at the school.

To join in Year 7, your child will be asked to complete an online assessment called the ISEB Common Pretest, which assesses skills in Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The test provides a universal and standardised measure of attainment, ability and potential.

The ISEB Pretest assessment will cover the following areas:
- English – covers comprehension, sentence completion, spelling and punctuation.
- Maths – measures mathematical ability relative to the national curriculum stage.
- Verbal Reasoning – tests thinking and problem solving with words.
- Non-Verbal Reasoning – assesses thinking with shapes, space, diagrams and pictures.
In total, the four parts of the ISEB Common Pre-test take approximately 2.5 hours to administer and complete. There is no audio component to any of the tests.
