Introduction

James Hope College is an independent day and boarding secondary school for boys and girls. It is located in Nigeria and is able to provide a superb education to pupils at a reduced rate because it is supported by an endowment fund set up by the philanthropist Mr Jim Ovia.

The curriculum at James Hope College is unique, combining the Nigerian and British curriculums. Students study a wide range of subjects, including science, maths, humanities, languages and business studies. Additionally, problem-solving skills are developed, and creative thinking is encouraged so pupils are equipped to succeed in the 21st century.

An extensive co-curricular programme means all pupils can participate in activities they enjoy and step out of their comfort zones to try something new. Getting involved enables pupils to have fun, gain confidence and develop holistically.

Pastoral care is taken seriously at James Hope College. Each College residence has an experienced House Parent running it who is there to guide and support each student in their house. Only when pupils feel safe and secure can they reach their full potential.

James Hope College: Admissions Process for 11 Plus (11+)/Year 7 Entry

James Hope College only admits pupils to Year 7. Candidates for Year 7 entry must be aged 10, 11 or 12 in September of Year 7 and have completed 6 years of primary education.

If you are considering applying for a place for your child, you should email or call the school to arrange a visit. Visiting will allow you to view the facilities and discover more about the school’s ethos.

Registering for a place involves filling out the registration form and paying a small fee. You must also provide a photocopy of your child’s birth certificate or passport, two recent passport photographs and their most recent school report.

Your child will then sit an online test called the CAT4 (Cognitive Abilities Test). This is so the school can assess whether your child is likely to be able to access their challenging curriculum.

Candidates who perform well in the CAT4 will be invited to James Hope College for an interview, conducted by a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

After the interviews, offers will be made. To accept an offer, you have to agree to the College’s Terms & Conditions, submit the necessary paperwork and pay the non-refundable deposit.

Please note that the College may contact your child’s current school for a reference.

James Hope College: Scholarships

The scholarship programme at James Hope College is extensive. Scholarships are offered to bright students who work hard. For more information, please contact the school directly.

Entrance assessment for Year 7: Online CAT4 and interview

The CAT4 (Cognitive Abilities Test) is an online test produced by GL Assessment. Your child will be in Year 6 when they take the test for Year 7 entry, meaning they will sit Level C of the test.

How your child performs in the CAT4 is crucial because a strong performance will mean they get invited to James Hope College for an interview and have the chance of being offered a place.

The results of the CAT4 are age-standardised, meaning a candidate’s raw score is adjusted based on their age. This process ensures that comparisons between students of different ages are fair and that older or younger students are not disadvantaged simply due to age-related differences in development.

James Hope College: CAT4 Format

The CAT4 consists of multiple-choice questions that cover Verbal reasoning, Non-Verbal reasoning, Quantitative reasoning and Spatial reasoning.

  • The Verbal reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to solve problems using words.
  • The Non-Verbal reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to solve problems by analysing visual information.
  • The Quantitative reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to solve problems using numbers.
  • The Spatial reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to understand how objects can move in a three-dimensional world.

Preparing for the James Hope College CAT4

At Pretest Plus, we believe it is hard for candidates to perform to the best of their ability in entrance exams when they have no idea what to expect. Fear of the unknown can lead to anxiety that will adversely affect performance. For this reason and others, we have produced CAT4 Practice Tests that closely resemble the actual CAT4, which means your child can work their way through them to become familiar with the format and types of questions they will be asked in the CAT4. Such targeted practice will put them in a stronger position to do well than other candidates.

Furthermore, your child can use the answers and explanations provided with the Practice Tests to go over any mistakes they make and learn from them. By the time they sit the actual CAT 4, they should be proficient in all the areas that will be tested.
