Introduction
Lancing College is an independent day and boarding school for boys and girls aged 13-18 and is part of the Lancing family of schools. It was founded in 1848 by Nathaniel Woodard, who established schools with Christian values at the heart of school life. The Lancing College of today continues this tradition.
Academically, Lancing College is superb. In 2023, 56% of GCSE grades were in the 9-7 range. When you consider that this was achieved by the cohort that started at the College in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, this statistic becomes even more impressive. Pupils are not passive learners but independent thinkers who play an active role in their learning.
The co-curricular programme at Lancing College is extensive, and the impressive facilities mean pupils are spoilt for choice. There is an Equestrian Centre that is open seven days a week so pupils can ride as often as possible. There is also the Farm, which is a fantastic 70-acre working farm where pupils can learn about conservation and animal welfare. Click here to have a look at a whole host of activities that are on offer.
Equally outstanding is Lancing College’s pastoral provision. In 2023, the ISI report declared the care shown towards pupils at the College to be ‘a significant strength of the school’. Pupils are taught to respect each other, and staff work hard to ensure everyone feels safe and secure.
Lancing College: 13 Plus (13+)/Year 9 (Third Form) Admissions Process for the Advance Programme
A good place to start if you are considering Lancing College for your child is by looking at the school’s website, which will give you plenty of information about the school.
The next step is to contact the school and arrange a visit. You can arrange a personal visit or sign up for a Saturday Group Visit, allowing you to have a pupil-led tour of the school, hear from the Head, participate in activities and chat with staff. Please note that you must sign up for a Saturday Group Visit using the online booking system.
If you decide you do want a place at Lancing College for your child and your child resides in the UK, you should then fill out the registration form. This can be done as early as the summer term of Year 5 and must be done by the end of October of Year 6 for the Advance Programme, which the College strongly recommends. You will also need to pay a £200 registration fee and provide two school reports. A reference from your child’s current school will be requested, too.
Your child will then be invited to Lancing College for an Experience Day, which takes place in January of Year 6, during which they will participate in academic and extracurricular activities and be interviewed. The school is not just looking for candidates with academic ability but is looking for social skills and kindness.
The academic assessment for 13+ Advance Programme entry comprises the following:
- An online test (CAT4)
- A written task
You will know whether your child has been offered a place in February or March of Year 6. Accepting a place involves completing the acceptance form and paying a deposit (refunded when your child leaves Lancing College).
Lancing College: 13 Plus (13+)/Year 9 (Third Form) Scholarships and Bursaries
Scholarship applications for Year 9 entry need to be completed in the first term of Year 8. Pupils can apply for a maximum of two scholarships but can only benefit financially from one award. Scholars are expected to be excellent role models and to be fully involved in their area of specialism both inside and outside of school.
The following scholarships are available to Year 9 entrants:
- Academic
- Art
- Drama
- Music
- All-Rounder
- Cricket
- Sport
A limited number of bursaries are available to pupils who have been awarded a scholarship. Bursaries are means-tested awards that are designed to enable pupils to attend Lancing College whose families are unable to afford the fees. When you register your child for a place at Lancing College, you should indicate on the registration form if financial assistance will be needed. Applying for a bursary will require you to provide detailed information about your financial situation.
