Milton Abbey holds Lower School Open Days, during which you and your child will have the opportunity to hear a presentation from the Head, take a pupil-led tour of the campus (including the boarding houses) and experience lectures, as well as other activities. Since places are limited, you are strongly advised by the school to pre-book via the Admissions Office.
There are similar events that you can also attend, called Introduction Visits (held on Thursdays).
Admissions Visits are for children who are already registered. During these events, prospective pupils are assessed for entry at Milton Abbey. More details are available on the school’s website.
Milton Abbey | The 13+ Assessment – CAT4
To join in Year 9, your child will be asked to complete an online assessment called the Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4), which assesses Verbal, Non-Verbal, Spatial and Quantitative Reasoning. Here’s a brief introduction to the four subjects covered in this online exam:
The Verbal Reasoning part of the CAT4 test requires your child to solve problems using words. They will be asked questions based on identifying verbal similarities and analogies.
The Non-Verbal Reasoning part of the CAT4 test requires your child to solve problems using shapes and patterns, rather than with words. They will be asked questions based on matrices and identifying similarities.
The Spatial Reasoning part of the CAT4 test assesses your child’s ability to identify shapes and how they change. They will be asked questions based on recognising target shapes or visualising how unfolded pieces of paper will look.
The Quantitative Reasoning part of the CAT4 test assesses your child’s ability to solve problems using numbers. They will be asked questions based on sequences and relationships between numbers.

Milton Abbey CAT4 Exam | Preparation Tips
At Pretest Plus, we believe that a little preparation goes a long way to improving a student’s confidence and performance in entrance examinations.
We provide online practice tests and video courses which focus on helping students familiarise themselves with the exact types of questions that they will be asked in their assessment.
Our practice tests will help your child get used to the format, timings and questions that will come up in the actual exam. They are specifically designed for CAT4 Level E, which is taken in Year 8 for 13+ entry.
Each 13+ CAT4 practice test is marked automatically. Your child will then be able to review every question in detail with a clear step-by-step explanation.
We also provide comparative ranking statistics so you can get an idea of your child’s relative level compared to their peer group.
Our online video tutorial courses are designed to teach your child how to approach each of the various question types that come up in the exam. We provide a step-by-step framework that will allow them to answer any Reasoning question efficiently, accurately and confidently.
