Founded in 1868, Monkton Combe School is an independent boarding and day school for girls and boys aged 2-18. Located close to the city of Bath, the Senior School is located in Midford Valley, close to Monkton Combe. An Anglican school, Monkton Combe has high expectations of its pupils, particularly in academia and sports. Their facilities are first-class, with six boarding houses, a boathouse close to the River Avon and a multi-million-pound music centre.
How to Apply for 13 Plus Entry to Monkton Combe School
If you would like your child to attend Monkton Combe School in Year 9, you are advised to attend a Senior School Open Day. Places can be booked online and the open days give both parents and prospective pupils the opportunity to take an introductory tour of the school. The tours enables parents and students to see the school grounds and learn more about the teaching, facilities and activities on offer.
To proceed with an application for entry to the school at 13+, parents must complete a registration form and return it to the Senior School’s Registrar, alongside a non-refundable deposit of £100. If your child requires learning support, the school also requests an educational psychologist’s report.
Monkton Combe School 13 Plus School Admissions Criteria
Year 9 Entry is subject to results in the Assessment Day and a satisfactory reference from the pupil’s current school including a CAT4 score.
If your child is unable to attend the assessment day, a place will be offered on the basis of a strong CAT4 score and a positive reference from their current school. The CAT4 will be sat in Year 6.
How to Prepare for the Monkton Combe School Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4)
At Pretest Plus, we believe that a little preparation before the CAT4 assessment can go a long way to improving a student’s confidence.
As way of an introduction to preparing for the CAT4 assessment, we’d recommend reading the following resources:

One of the most effective ways to prepare for an assessment is to create a detailed study plan that outlines what topics need to be studied before test day. As part of the schedule, we’d recommend that parents allow time to practice exam technique for the CAT using practice tests and courses. Not only do these help familiarise students with the layout of the test, but they allow students to answer practice questions that may be similar to those asked on the day.
We specialise in publishing 13+ CAT4 practice tests and courses to help students improve their confidence. We have several 90-minute practice tests available, each consisting of 8 modules that cover Verbal, Non-Verbal, Quantitative and Spatial Reasoning questions.
Each of our 13+ CAT4 practice tests is pitched at the same difficulty level but contains a unique set of questions. The first provides parents with an indication of their child’s current cognitive abilities, whilst the remaining can be a great way to benchmark and monitor progress and improvement.
