Introduction

Founded in 1868, Monkton Combe School is an independent co-educational school located near Bath in Somerset. It caters for both boarding and day pupils and fosters high expectations, particularly in academia and sports. The school’s facilities are first-class, boasting several listed buildings, and the alumni list is long and impressive, including esteemed sportspeople, professors, historians and the curator of TED. [1]

Academically, Monkton Combe delivers a comprehensive curriculum that encompasses a number of relevant disciplines, including languages, technology, social studies and mathematics. The educational programme, characterised by both variety and adaptability, inspires students to achieve their utmost potential.

Non-academically, Monkton Combe offers around 70 enrichment activities, ranging from robotics and LAMDA to tennis and hockey. The school aspires to provide each child with opportunities to explore their intrinsic interests, predominantly through active involvement in endeavours such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award and the Combined Cadet Force (CCF). [2]

In recent years, Monkton Combe has run a whole-school Wellbeing Day, allowing the cohort to actively participate in a variety of lectures and workshops designed to enhance their social, physical and mental wellbeing. Thanks to this initiative, students have gained insights into pressing contemporary issues like modern-day slavery, benefiting from guest lectures by representatives from ‘Unseen’, a charity passionately dedicated to eradicating slavery worldwide. [3]

The extensive educational offerings at Monkton Combe have not only nurtured academically adept students but have also paved the way for leavers to secure a place at illustrious Russell Group universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. With a bespoke approach, staff extend insightful and supportive guidance to every student, shaping their applications to suit the standards of esteemed higher education establishments, where leavers pursue courses that reflect their diverse and enriched interests.

Monkton Combe School 13 Plus (13+) Entry Admissions Process

Open Mornings at Monkton Combe take place in February and May. During these events, you and your child can go on a guided tour of the facilities, typically ending with refreshments. Meetings with key members of staff also take place. Please click here to book. An individual visit can be arranged if requested.

To formally apply for a place, you should complete an online registration form two to three years prior to entry and pay the £100 registration fee. Soon after you register, Monkton Combe will request a reference from your child’s current Head and a copy of their latest school report.

While your child is in Year 6 or Year 7, they will be asked to sit an online exam (known as the Cognitive Abilities Test), administered at their current school prior to Assessment Day. If your child is not taking the CAT4 at their current school, get in touch with Monkton Combe for further information. Assessment Day will involve fun activities, enabling the school to evaluate the attributes, such as confidence, creativity and craftsmanship, of each candidate. There may also be a creative writing exercise.

As part of the 13+ admissions process, your child will attend an interview, conducted by a senior member of staff. Within two weeks, they may receive an offer of a place, to be accepted with a payment of a deposit: £750 for a day place and £1,000 for a boarding place.

To talented and ambitious 13+ applicants, Monkton Combe offers scholarships in the following areas:

– Academic ability

– Art & design

– Expressive arts

– Sports

These scholarships don’t carry any financial award. To families in need of assistance with paying the fees, the school offers means-tested bursaries. The number of available bursaries is limited, and they are awarded based on a full confidential statement of financial circumstances. Please note that higher priority will be given to children of clergy or missionaries. More details are available on this page
