Introduction

Oxford High School (OHS) is an independent girls’ school for pupils aged 4 to 18. It is located in north Oxford and benefits from its strong links with the University of Oxford. OHS is proud to be a member of the Girls’ Day School Trust, a family of schools that work collaboratively to provide girls with a first-class education.

Academic excellence is a priority at OHS. Dedicated teachers engage pupils with challenging and inspirational lessons, encouraging everyone to reach their full academic potential. Notably, six modern languages are taught at OHS, in addition to Latin and Ancient Greek.

The co-curricular programme is an important part of school life. Getting involved enables girls to grow in confidence, make new friends, step out of their comfort zones and develop leadership skills. With over 100 activities available, every girl has the opportunity to enhance her existing talents and discover new skills.

The pastoral care system at OHS demonstrates the school’s commitment to ensuring that pupils thrive. One significant feature is the Positive Programme, an initiative that develops emotional literacy across the entire school community. Another feature is the experienced counsellors, based in the Health Centre, who offer support to those who need it.

Admissions Process for 11 Plus Entry to Oxford High School

The best way to start the admissions process is by visiting OHS, giving you the chance to find out more about the school’s ethos. You can attend an Open Day in September or a ‘Take a Look at OHS’ event in June or November.

The next step is to register your daughter by the November deadline of the year before entry and pay the non-refundable registration fee. This fee is £120 for residents in the UK and £180 for those residing outside the UK. You are not required to pay the fee if you are on income support.

Later in November, an Admissions Day is held at OHS. Your daughter will attend the Admissions Day to sit an online Quest assessment and a 30-minute English paper. She will be interviewed, too, but that will be on a later date, and a reference from her current school will be reviewed.

In December, OHS will let you know whether your daughter has secured a place at OHS. If she hasn’t, the school may offer to put her on a waiting list.

If you accept an offer of a place, you must pay a £1,000 deposit. This deposit will be refunded after your child has left OHS, less any outstanding fees.

Oxford High School: Scholarships and Bursaries for Year 7 Entry

If your daughter performs exceptionally well in the Oxford High School Year 7 entrance exam and her interview, she may be offered an academic scholarship or exhibition.

You can apply for up to two of the other scholarships by the January deadline in the calendar year of entry: art and design/textiles, drama, music and sport. Exhibitions are also awarded.

The scholarships are valued at 5% of the school’s annual fees, while exhibitions are valued at £300 per year.

For more information about scholarships, please visit this link.

You can also apply for a bursary. If you intend to apply for a bursary, you must indicate this on your daughter’s registration form. Bursaries, unlike scholarships and exhibitions, are means-tested.

They are worth from 30% to 100% of the school’s annual fees, depending on a family’s financial circumstances, and are reviewed annually. You are unlikely to be eligible for a bursary if you have a household income above £87,500.

Oxford High School: Online Quest Assessment for Year 7 Entry

Your daughter will complete an online Quest assessment and a written English paper as part of the Year 7 entry process to Oxford High School.

The online Quest assessment has a duration of approximately one hour and 35 minutes and comprises six sections:

  • Maths: The maths section will require your daughter to be knowledgeable about the topics covered in the Year 5 maths national curriculum (arithmetic, number, geometry, measurement and statistics). Questions will evaluate your daughter’s ability to apply her knowledge, as well as use mathematical and logical reasoning. Some questions will involve multiple steps to reach the answer.
  • English: The English section will require your daughter to read a passage, which could be fiction or non-fiction, and then answer questions about it. She must demonstrate that she can, amongst other things, make inferences. There may also be questions testing your daughter’s spelling, punctuation and grammar.
  • Verbal Reasoning: The verbal reasoning section will evaluate your daughter’s competency when it comes to answering questions using written information. She may, for example, have to identify a pair of synonyms from two groups of words.
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning: The non-verbal reasoning section will assess your daughter’s capability of solving problems that use visual images rather than words. She may, for example, have to select the group of blocks that could be used to make a given shape.
  • Puzzles and Problem-Solving: The puzzles and problem-solving section will determine how well your daughter can think logically and work methodically to solve interactive puzzles, demonstrating her ability to stay focused on tasks.
  1. Creative Comprehension: The creative comprehension section will examine your daughter’s ability to make sense of a range of sources that all come under one common theme. Some questions will require her to make links between multiple sources.

Some of the content in the first four sections is adaptive, meaning the questions will get easier or harder, depending on your daughter’s performance. The last two sections are not adaptive.

Do not worry if your daughter is one of the younger candidates: scores are age-standardised for fairness.

Tips to Help Your Child Prepare for the Oxford High School Year 7 Online Quest Assessment

There are many ways to help your daughter feel ready for OHS’s 11+ online Quest assessment. We recommend the following:

  • Stick to short but regular study sessions because research has shown that children can generally focus for 2-3 minutes per year of their age.
  • Schedule plenty of breaks and fun activities so that the preparation process is just a part of your daughter’s life and doesn’t feel overwhelming. Time to recharge and enjoy her normal hobbies will help her mental wellbeing.
  • Revise Year 5 maths and English topics so that your daughter has the knowledge she needs for the online assessment. She could write out key facts on flash cards that she then uses to revise.
    1. Encourage your daughter to read every day to enhance her vocabulary and reading comprehension, which will be of particular benefit in the English and verbal reasoning sections of the assessment.
    2. Ask your daughter mental arithmetic questions so that she gets better at answering quickly and accurately. You could do this when you are on car journeys together or having a walk.
    3. Play problem-solving games and solve puzzles together to help your daughter perform well with the questions that require logical reasoning and problem-solving skills. You could do Sudoku puzzles and play chess, for example. It’s also a fun way to spend time together.
  • Use our thoroughly researched and accurate Quest practice tests so that your daughter knows what to expect in the online Quest assessment, which will remove any anxiety about the unknown. She can work her way through our tests, learning from her mistakes along the way, to build her confidence and identify any knowledge gaps that require attention.
