Palmers Green High School (PGHS) is an independent school for girls aged from 3 to 16. It was founded in 1905 by Miss Alice Hum, a Quaker who chose the motto ‘By Love Serve One Another’ for the school. This motto is still at the heart of life at Palmers Green High School.
The curriculum in Years 7-9 is broad and balanced, including both traditional subjects and non-traditional subjects (such as PSHEE, art, careers education, drama and music). Typically, there are about 15 pupils in a class in KS3. This small class size, combined with superb teaching, allows pupils to reach their full potential.
The extra-curricular provision at PGHS is excellent, helping pupils to become confident, well-rounded young people. The following clubs are just a few of the many that are available:
- Knit and Natter
- Chess
- Mindfulness
- Netball
- Yoga
In addition to this, PGHS arranges plenty of trips for students. For example, Year 7 pupils have a 3-day team-building trip, and Year 9 and 10 pupils can go to Paris for the weekend.
Staff take pastoral care very seriously at Palmers Green High School. Every child is valued as an individual and knows they can talk to a member of staff if they have any concerns, no matter how small the concern may be. Many things have been put in place to ensure the school environment is warm and nurturing, including a PSHEE scheme of work that emphasises the importance of kindness and tolerance, and a mentoring scheme that pairs Year 10 pupils with Year 7 pupils to give Year 7 pupils valuable peer support when settling in at PGHS.
Palmers Green High School: 11 Plus (11+)/Year 7 Admissions Process
Prospective parents and pupils are encouraged to visit the school. You can do this by arranging an individual tour and/or by attending an open event. A Whole School Open Morning is held in the summer term and Senior School Working Open Mornings are held in the autumn term. Please click here for more information. In addition to this, your child can attend a Taster Day in the autumn term a year before entry.
If you decide to apply for a place for your child, you should complete a registration form and pay the non-refundable £75 registration fee. You can download a registration form or register online.
Once you have submitted your registration form and paid the fee, your child will be invited to sit an assessment at PGHS. The official assessment date will be in November of Year 6. However, if you miss this, you should contact the school to arrange an alternative date.
The entrance assessment at PGHS comprises the following:
- ISEB Common Pre-test (an online exam)
- Creative writing paper
Please note that you will be required to register your daughter for the ISEB Pre-test directly with ISEB.
If your child performs well in the entrance assessment for Year 7, she will be invited to PGHS for an interview. The interview will enable the school to find out what your daughter is like as a person and whether she would thrive at PGHS.
A report and reference from your child’s current school will also be looked at as part of the admissions process.
Should your daughter be offered a place, you will need to confirm in writing that you would like to accept it, and you will need to pay the £1,000 acceptance deposit, which will be refunded when your child leaves PGHS.
Palmers Green High School: 11 Plus (11+)/Year 7 Scholarships and Bursaries
The school offers the following scholarships for 11+ entry:
- Academic
- Art
- Drama
- Music
- Sport
All candidates who sit the entrance assessment on the official Assessment Day in November of Year 6 will be considered for an Academic Scholarship.
Bursaries are means-tested awards designed to enable gifted girls to attend PGHS whose parents are unable to afford the school’s fees. If you want to apply for a bursary, you must do so before the entrance assessment in November. You will be required to give detailed information about your income and assets. If you are successful with your bursary application, please be aware that it will be reviewed annually. Only a limited number of bursaries are available.
