What is ‘NEW ISEB Pretest English: Reading Comprehension’?
It’s a set of 14 online practice tests that will help your child prepare for the Reading Comprehension section in the new ISEB Pretest English module.
These tests are designed to match the brand new ISEB format. This includes scrollable texts, paragraph numbering, unique question wording, source text variation and more.
Each of the 14 practice tests in this pack replicates every element of the new examination format across fiction, non-fiction and poetry.

Who is it for?
These practice tests are specifically designed for students taking the NEW ISEB Common Pretest.
What’s new in this year’s test of Reading Comprehension?
The key changes have been listed below. All of these changes have been implemented in this product.
Number of Passages
In the old version of the ISEB Pretest, there was just one longer passage.
In the new test format, there will be multiple smaller passages of 300-500 words each.
Genres
In the older version of the test, the passage was either fiction or non-fiction.
In the new test format, the passages can be fiction, non-fiction or poetry.
Layout
In the older version of the test, the passage was on the left hand side of the screen and divided into sections. The questions and answer choices were on the right hand side of the screen in a column. Students had to click numbers underneath the passage to navigate between the sections.
In the new test format, the passage is in the centre of the screen and students may need to scroll down to view it all. The questions are underneath the passage. The answer options will be aligned in a row if they consist of one word only. If they are more than word, they will be aligned in a column, one under another.
Line Numbering
In the older version of the test, the passage was numbered every five lines.
In the new test format, only the paragraphs or verses are numbered.
Question Style
The new test format can have three types of question for Reading Comprehension, as confirmed by ISEB:
– Some questions will refer to specific paragraphs (or verses). This means you only need to refer to this section.
– Some questions will refer to specific sentences. These questions will repeat the sentence so you do not have to find it in the passage.
– Some questions will be about the whole text.
How will these tests benefit my child?
The NEW ISEB Common Pretest English module is divided into two sections.
Section One tests Reading Comprehension.
Section Two tests Grammar.
This product focuses on Section One: Reading Comprehension.
By analysing the Reading Comprehension section in detail, we’ve managed to identify all the key question types that will be included according to ISEB:
– Retrieval of information
– Making inferences.
– Explaining the meaning of words in context.
– Explaining how meaning is enhanced through choice of words and phrases (for example, choice of adjectives or literary devices: personification, alliteration, similes, metaphors). Summarising main ideas.
– Making comparisons (across the text, between characters, between formality).

– is familiar with every type of Reading Comprehension question and text type that could come up on exam day.

– will face no surprises when taking the actual exam.
