Who are these Progress Practice Tests for?

These progress tests will prove ideal if:

► Your child is set to take a Progress Test at school from Years 1 to 6.

► You would like to conduct a diagnostic assessment of your child’s level based on the relevant curriculum for Maths and English.

What are Progress Tests?

Progress Tests in Mathematics and English are becoming increasingly popular. The most commonly used Progress Test is published by GL Assessment.

Many schools use Progress Tests for internal assessment to judge attainment over the academic year and make decisions regarding setting children according to ability. Progress Tests can also form part of a school’s admissions process.

How will these Progress Practice Tests benefit my child?

Our online practice tests are designed to familiarise students with the format, style and content of these multiple-choice tests so they feel confident and prepared for the actual assessment. Solutions, explanations and comparative peer group statistics are provided for each module immediately upon completion.

Each Progress Practice Test covers the full UK National Curriculum Syllabus for the relevant Year in Mathematics and English. They will quickly and accurately highlight your child’s strengths and weaknesses, so you know which areas to focus on.

Each question is designed in a diagnostic format with detailed explanations provided for every answer choice. Therefore, you will not only be able to work out which topics your child finds difficult but you will also be able to identify their specific misconceptions.

This makes the process of learning and improving much more efficient as you know the exact reason behind each incorrect response.

What is a Diagnostic Question?

All the questions in our Progress Practice Tests are diagnostic. Diagnostic questions provide greater insights into your child’s performance as each incorrect answer choice is designed to represent a possible misconception.

As such, you will know not only which questions your child gets incorrect but also why they chose the wrong answer. Below is a simple example question with explanations for each answer choice:

Question

Calculate 12.04 × 100

A 12.0400

B 0.1204

C 120.4

D 1204

Explanation

A 12.0400: Sorry, that’s not correct.

It looks as if you have just added two zeros to the number. Your answer, 12.0400, has exactly the same value as 12.04, so ‘adding zeros’ will not work for numbers with decimals.

  • When multiplying by 100, each digit becomes 100 times larger.
  • Use a place value grid to move each digit 2 places to the left.
  • The correct answer is 1204

Explanation

B 0.1204: Sorry, that’s not correct.

It seems that you have divided instead of multiplying. Check the operation.

12.04 × 100 = 1204

Explanation

C 120.4: Sorry, that’s not correct.

It seems that you have multiplied by 10 not 100. Always check the question.

12.04 × 100 = 1204

Explanation

D 1204: Well done, that’s correct.

Each digit becomes 100 times larger so moves 2 columns to the left in a place value grid.

All the questions in these practice tests come with detailed, diagnostic explanations as above.
