Reading Blue Coat School is a co-educational independent day school in Sonning, Berkshire. Situated next to the River Thames, it has been educating bright pupils since its founding in 1646. Reading Blue Coat School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions Process
Whole school Open Mornings take place in May and October. These events include guided tours of the facilities and an introductory presentation by the Head. Reading Blue Coat also hosts mini tours of the school, lasting around two hours, which should be attended by parents only. Click here to learn more.
To register, you should complete and submit this registration form and pay the non-refundable fee of £100. This will formally commence the admissions process which consists of three steps:
– an interview
– an assessment
– a school reference
In mid-October, your child will receive an invitation to attend an assessment day at the school, taking place later in the Autumn Term (November or December). On the day, they will be interviewed by a member of staff, sit an academic assessment and take part in team-building activities. On the basis of a successful performance on this day and a quality school reference, your child may receive an offer of a place in February, to be confirmed with a payment of a £1,250 deposit. The acceptance deadline is in March.
Several academic scholarships are offered at 11+ entry. These are awarded based on outstanding results in the 11+ entrance assessment. There’s no separate scholarship test: all candidates taking the entrance exam are automatically considered for academic scholarships. The maximum value of each scholarship is 5% of the tuition fees.

Reading Blue Coat School is dedicated to expanding access to its offerings by providing means-tested financial assistance towards tuition fees. This financial aid is referred to as a bursary. Awarded to applicants from low-income families who meet the school’s academic criteria, bursaries can cover up to 100% of tuition fees, based on the particular circumstances surrounding each eligible family.
Each year, Blue Coat evaluates the provision of bursaries. Such reviews will include a comprehensive assessment of your financial status, after which the award may be increased, decreased or withdrawn.

The Reading Blue Coat School 11+ online assessment consists of the following sections:
This 20-minute section assesses students’ proficiency in various mathematical domains, including arithmetic and problem -solving. Questions will include diagrams and/or charts.
This 20-minute section consists of multiple-choice questions designed to assess students’ reading comprehension, grammar and punctuation skills.

This 10-minute section assesses students’ spatial and visual reasoning through multiple-choice questions.
⦿ Verbal Reasoning
This 10-minute section assesses students’ vocabulary and their ability to discern context-based meanings.
