Introduction

The Royal Grammar School, Guildford, also known as the RGS, is a selective day school for boys in Guildford, Surrey. Dating back to 1509, this high-performing school became independent in 1977. [1]

The teaching provision covers a wide selection of departments, including art, science, classics, DT, drama, economics, English, mathematics, foreign languages, humanities, music, PE and politics. Encouraging intellectual curiosity, the school successfully combines its grammar school legacy with a breadth of progressive academic opportunities and hence challenges pupils to grow ‘beyond the confines of the curriculum’.

Co-curricularly, RGS maintains the same incentive, which is to maximise boys’ capacity for all-round development. Hence, a broad range of clubs and societies is on offer, including everything from medical society, Model UN and swimming to judo, fencing and chess. The enrichment programme also includes trips and expeditions to far-off destinations such as Cambodia and Nepal, bringing pupils closer to understanding different cultures and moulding them into open-minded, tolerant and forward-looking citizens of the modern world. In order to be considered for a Year 9 place, your son should be registered with the school while he is in Year 6. The registration deadline is at the beginning of November. The fee is £100.

A part of the admissions process, RGS will ask for a confidential reference from your son’s current Headteacher. There will also be an interview.

During the first term of Year 6, your son will sit the ISEB Common Pretest. Besides the pretest, he will be asked to complete a piece of English writing (essay).

If his performance is inconsistent with his reference, your son may be invited back to the school for a second interview.

Offer letters are sent out in mid-February (of Year 6), to be accepted by the deadline in March.
