Introduction

Royal Russell School is an independent school in the Shirley area of Croydon, Surrey. Catering for a mixed cohort in line with the motto Non sibi sed omnibus (Not for oneself, but for all), the school offers both boarding and day options, providing flexibility to suit the diverse needs and preferences of students and their families. [1]

Royal Russell boasts an expansive 110-acre campus, which has a number of modern, spacious and highly functional facilities for performing arts, sports, technology, science and design. The school’s staff are committed to providing an all-round education at a high standard, comprehensively catering for pupils’ needs for intellectual exploration.

The curriculum is characterised by versatility, and the focus is on developing individual strengths and talents, which helps produce independent and agile learners. The academic programme includes mathematics, humanities, social studies and natural sciences, all enhanced by high-quality teaching and a dynamic environment.

Beyond in-class activities, Royal Russell provides further engagement through an array of co-curricular opportunities. Clubs range from Amnesty International, netball and touch typing, to hockey, music theory and Japanese, ensuring that students’ educational experiences are deeply intertwined with their social and personal development. [2]

School trivia: For over thirty years, Royal Russell School has been a key player in organising and participating in Model United Nations (MUN) meetings. The school’s prestigious annual, four-day International MUN Conference attracts over 500 students from all around the world, fostering skills in debating, public speaking and leadership. These student-led meetings focus on enhancing communication skills, using the UN as a framework for engaging peers from different schools.

Royal Russell School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions Process

Open events offer an ideal opportunity for prospective pupils to become familiar with Royal Russell School and its overarching provision. They include tours of the facilities and meetings with members of the staff, which will help you and your child decide whether the school is a good fit. Click here to learn more.

It is advised that you register your child with Royal Russell while they are in Year 5. The fee for this is £100 (or £150 for boarding pupils), and the deadline is in November of Year 6.

Eleven plus assessments are held in January of Year 6 on Assessment Day, consisting of an online test and a creative writing paper. Your child will also attend an interview, during which they will discuss a piece of their own work or an object of interest with a member of the school’s staff. Along with the assessments and interview, participants will enjoy a fun activity and a delicious lunch. A review of a report from your child’s current school is also an important part of the admissions process.

Scholarships are awarded for strong academic ability, as demonstrated in the entrance exam, or  for exceptional prowess in art, music, drama or sports, on the basis of further assessments and/or auditions. These awards are granted regardless of financial means. Pupils have the option to apply for a maximum of two scholarships (in addition to being considered for an Academic Scholarship). The total financial value of a scholarship can range from 5% to 35% of the tuition fees.

Bursaries are awarded based on financial need and are subject to review. Please note that if the school receives knowingly false or recklessly provided information regarding income or assets, a bursary may be revoked.

Each application is evaluated on its individual merits. However, families with a gross income exceeding £40,000 per annum are generally unlikely to receive a substantial bursary. If you wish to apply for a bursary, you should indicate your interest on the registration form and complete a confidential Statement of Financial Circumstances.
