Introduction

Sutton Valence School (SVS) is an independent school for boys and girls aged 2-18. It was founded in 1576 and is rightly proud of its rich history while also being forward thinking. The Senior School educates pupils from First Form (Year 7) to Sixth Form and offers both day and boarding places.

Academic excellence is a priority at Sutton Valence Senior School. Pupils’ progress is monitored closely to ensure any issues causing pupils to fall below their target grades are swiftly addressed. The monitoring also means that pupils who are excelling can have their achievements celebrated, with their target grades potentially being raised.

The enrichment programme at SVS is extensive, giving students plenty of opportunities to work as a team, develop leadership skills and have fun. Available activities include critical thinking, cardiovascular training and sustainable fashion. In addition to this, amongst other things, students can get involved in SVS’s theatrical productions, take part in music concerts, complete Duke of Edinburgh’s Award schemes and go on school trips.

Underpinning life at Sutton Valence School are strong Christian values that promote kindness, respect and tolerance. This helps to create a safe, secure and happy environment in which students can flourish.

Sutton Valence School: Admissions Process for 13 Plus (13+)/Year 9 (Third Form) Deferred Entry

The first step in the admissions process is to visit Sutton Valence School. You can attend an Open Morning (several are held throughout the year) or arrange an individual family appointment to meet the Head or a member of the Senior Management Team (SMT). Visiting enables you to learn more about the school.

If you decide you do want a place in the Third Form at SVS for your child, you should then fill out the registration form, provide a copy of your child’s current passport and pay the £100 registration fee. This should be done by the deadline in October of Year 6 because the primary entry route for the Third Form is via deferred entry.

As well as registering your child with SVS, you will also need to register them for the ISEB Common Pre-test, as this is the test SVS uses as its entrance exam for Third Form entry. Your child will then need to sit the ISEB Common Pre-test before the November deadline in Year 6.

Most candidates will sit the ISEB Pre-test at their current school; however, if this is not possible, alternative arrangements can be made.

Please note that SVS will request a report from your child’s current school, which will be reviewed as part of the admissions process. In addition to this, your child will need to have a brief interview with the Head or a member of the SMT (if they had an appointment with the Head or a member of the SMT during a visit to the school, this will count, and a separate interview will not be necessary).

You will know the outcome of your application in December of Year 6, and if your child is offered a place, you will need to accept it by March of Year 6, which will involve paying a deposit and filling out an acceptance form. The deposit is refundable when your child finishes their education at SVS.

If you have any questions about the admissions process, you should contact the admissions team at SVS (details are provided further down).

Preparing for the Sutton Valence School 13 Plus (13+)/Year 9 (Third Form) ISEB Common Pre-Test

At Pretest Plus, we believe that preparing for a competitive entrance exam will put your child in a strong position to do well. Our ISEB Pre-test Practice Tests were produced after thorough research to ensure they closely resemble the actual ISEB Pre-test in every respect. This means working their way through our Practice Tests will help your child in the following ways:

  • They should not feel nervous about the actual ISEB Pre-test because they will know what to expect. Eliminating nerves will lead to a better performance on the day.
  • They will get used to the timings of the ISEB Pre-test, meaning they will know the pace they need to work at.
  • They will be familiar with the types of questions they will be asked, which means they will be able to work quicker and more accurately in the actual test than they would if they were facing unfamiliar question types.
  • They should improve as they work their way through the Practice Tests. This will help them to believe they can do well in the real ISEB Pre-test, which is psychologically important.
  • They can use the answers and explanations provided with the Practice Tests to identify any weak areas they have. They can then work on these areas before they take the ISEB Pre-test.
