Introduction
The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) is an independent school for pupils aged 3-18. It comprises a Primary School (ages 3-11), a Senior School (ages 11-16) and a Sixth Form (ages 16-18). In the Primary School and Sixth Form, pupils are taught in co-educational classes. In the Senior School, pupils are taught in single-sex classes. GSAL believes that this model leads to the best academic and personal outcomes for students.
Academic excellence is a priority at GSAL. Small class sizes, superb teaching and state-of-the-art facilities mean pupils progress well. In Years 7-9, students study a wide range of subjects, enabling them to discover where their strengths and interests lie before choosing their GCSE subjects. Most students will take ten GCSEs, with maths, English language, English literature, sciences and religious studies being compulsory.
The co-curricular programme at The Grammar School at Leeds is impressive. There are over 200 clubs, activities and house competitions on offer, including art, chess, coding, string ensemble, squash and athletics. Trips and tours are also organised, such as a battlefields trip to northern France and a design technology trip to Singapore. This rich and varied life outside of the classroom allows pupils to learn while having fun and making new friends.
Superb pastoral care means that pupils thrive at GSAL. Each pupil has a tutor who will get to know them well and offer appropriate support and guidance when necessary. Admissions Process for Standard (Non-Bursary) 11 Plus Entry to The Grammar School at Leeds
Visiting GSAL is a great way to start the admissions process so that you can find out more about the school and see if it is a good fit for your child. You could attend an Open Doors morning, enabling you to take a tour of the school, meet staff and observe lessons. You could also attend the October Open Morning, which takes place on a Saturday.
The next step is to complete the online registration form and pay the £75 non-refundable registration fee. This needs to be done before the end of November when your child is in Year 6.
In January of Year 6, your child will sit maths, English reading and English writing papers. They will also be interviewed, and GSAL will review a reference from their current school and their most recent school report.
You will find out if your child has been offered a place within two weeks of the entrance exam. An acceptance deposit must be paid to secure the place.
Information for Bursary 11 Plus Entry to The Grammar School at Leeds
Please be aware that if you are applying for a bursary for your child, you must complete your application form by the end of September of Year 6. Once you have submitted the form and paid the registration fee, you will be required to complete a financial declaration form.
Many more families apply for a bursary than there are bursaries available. For this reason, bursary candidates will sit an exam in the October half-term of Year 6. Those who perform well will be shortlisted to sit the main entrance exam in January and be interviewed. Meeting the required standard in the entrance exam and interview and having a glowing reference and school report does not mean a bursary will be offered automatically, as more candidates could meet the eligibility criteria than there are bursaries available.

The Grammar School at Leeds: Scholarships for 11 Plus (11+)/Year 7 Entry
A few scholarships are awarded to the candidates who achieve the best results in the January entrance exam. You don’t need to fill out a scholarship application form because all candidates are automatically considered.
The Grammar School at Leeds: Bursary Exam for 11 Plus (11+)/Year 7 Entry
Bursary applicants will take the ISEB Common Pre-test in October of Year 6. You will need to register your child for this test on the official ISEB website.
The ISEB Pre-test is taken online and comprises four modules:
- English: This has two sections — reading comprehension and grammar.The reading comprehension will contain a few passages that could be fiction, non-fiction or poetry. Questions will require your child to look at specific sentences, specific paragraphs or verses, and the passage as a whole.The grammar section will have cloze sentences, shuffled sentences and questions testing the standard of your child’s spelling, punctuation and grammar.
- Mathematics: Maths questions will cover a variety of topics, including number and place value, basic mathematical operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, measurement, geometry and statistics.Your child may have to answer questions that cover more than one topic and questions that require problem-solving skills.
- Non-verbal reasoning: Your child will answer non-verbal reasoning questions and spatial reasoning questions in this module. The non-verbal reasoning questions will cover similarities and differences, codes and completing diagrams. The spatial reasoning questions involve being able to visualise objects in three dimensions and manipulating two-dimensional shapes.
- Verbal reasoning: Questions in this module will assess your child’s ability to interpret written information and evaluate how well they can use logic and reasoning to solve problems involving words.
Altogether, the ISEB Common Pre-test will take 2 hours and 15 minutes to complete. The modules can be split up and taken over several days. If your child is currently at a Prep School, they will likely take the test there.
Preparing for The Grammar School at Leeds ISEB Common Pre-Test for Bursary Entry for 11 Plus (11+)/Year 7
Only a small number of means-tested bursaries will be available for Year 7 entry, meaning your child will have to perform well in the ISEB Common Pre-test to get through to the next stage. Preparation is key. We have the following tips to help your child be fully prepared:
- Ensure your child begins preparation early: If you schedule regular study sessions well in advance of the ISEB Common Pre-test, you can keep them relatively short, which will ensure your child does not feel overwhelmed. Additionally, it is the best approach because children cannot focus effectively for long periods of time.
- Please encourage your child to get plenty of sleep, eat nutritional meals and exercise: All of these things promote wellbeing and cognitive function, helping your child stay happy, healthy and get the most out of their study sessions.
- Nurture a growth mindset: A growth mindset is the belief that we can all improve our skills through hard work and that we do not have a fixed level of ability. Draw attention to all your child’s successes, no matter how small, praising them for the effort they put in. Treat mistakes as an opportunity to learn and improve.
- Keep things in perspective: Your child needs to know that it is not the end of the world if they do not get shortlisted to sit the main exam in January. Talk to them about what will happen if they don’t, making it a perfectly acceptable alternative. This will reduce their stress levels and, in doing so, will make them more likely to perform well in the ISEB Common Pre-test.
- Use ISEB Pre-test practice tests: This is an essential part of your child’s preparation.
