Introduction
Haberdashers’ Boys’ School (Habs Boys) is an independent school for boys aged 4-18. It comprises a Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior School, as well as a Sixth Form. Boys benefit from a single-sex education while sharing a campus with Habs Girls, which creates plenty of opportunities for them to learn how to build positive, respectful relationships with girls.
The academic curriculum at Habs Boys is designed to be challenging and innovative. Pupils are not only placed in a strong position to excel in public exams but are also prepared for life as adults in the 21st Century. The Habs Centre for Innovation reflects the school’s commitment to developing its curriculum in the best interests of its students.
Co-curricular activities are an important part of school life at Habs Boys. There are over 160 clubs and societies on offer, meaning boys can pursue their interests and receive a truly holistic education. Available activities include a wide array of sports, cookery, sign language, knitting and chess.
Pastoral care is taken seriously at Habs Boys. The school recognises that students need to feel safe and secure in order to thrive. For this reason, there are staff members who are specifically responsible for the welfare of pupils. Additionally, buddies are appointed to help pupils who join the school in Year 7, 9 or 12 settle in.

Admissions Process for 11 Plus Entry to Haberdashers’ Boys’ School
Visiting Habs Boys for one of their Senior School open events will enable you to find out more about the school and its ethos.
If you decide that Habs Boys is a good fit for your son, you should then fill out the online registration form by the deadline in early November when your son is in Year 6. Please note that you will be required to pay a registration fee.
Your son will sit the first-round assessments in November of Year 6, a couple of weeks after the registration deadline. The assessments comprise an online Quest assessment and a handwritten creative writing task.
About half of all candidates, based on performances in the first-round assessments, will then be invited to the second-round assessment in January of Year 6, which is an interview. The interviews are a way to determine which candidates are enthusiastic about learning and will make the most of all Habs Boys has to offer.
Offers are sent out in February. If you wish to accept an offer made to your son, you must do so by the early-March deadline. You will also be asked to pay an acceptance deposit that is half a term’s fees. This deposit will be refunded when your son has completed his education at Habs Boys.
If you are interested in a scholarship and/or bursary for your son, the following will be of interest.
Haberdashers’ Boys’ School: Scholarships and Bursaries for Year 7 Entry
Scholarships
The following scholarships are available for 11+ entry:
- Academic
- Art
- Drama
- Music
- Sport
There is no need to apply for an academic scholarship because these awards will be made based on results in the entrance assessments and subsequent interviews. The other scholarships must be applied for by the scholarship application deadline in November of Year 6, which is the same date as the registration deadline.
Scholars are expected to show significant talent and potential in their area of interest. They are also expected to be excellent role models. It is possible to receive more than one scholarship.
Scholarships provide a modest reduction in the school’s tuition fees; however, bursaries are worth significantly more.
Bursaries
Bursaries are means-tested awards that enable boys to attend the school whose families cannot afford the fees. The awards are worth up to 100% of the school’s fees. If you have a gross household income of more than £115,000, you won’t be eligible for financial assistance, but if you have an income of less than £50,000, you could be eligible for a full bursary.
Currently, around 10% of students at Habs Boys receive financial assistance.
Additionally, thanks to the Bright Futures bursary scheme, two fully funded places will be available for pupils offered a place in Year 7, 9 or 12 who are of Black African or Caribbean heritage.
If you have any questions about scholarships or bursaries, please get in touch with the admissions team (contact details are provided earlier in this post).
Haberdashers’ Boys’ School: Online Quest Entrance Exam for Year 7 Entry
Along with a handwritten creative writing task, your son will sit a bespoke online entrance test produced by Quest for entry to Year 7 at Habs Boys. This online assessment is divided into the following five sections:
- Maths: Your son can expect questions that cover geometry, measurement, numbers, statistics and arithmetic that do not go beyond the Year 5 mathematics curriculum. Your son’s mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills will be put to the test, and he will need to answer some multi-step questions.
- Non-Verbal Reasoning: Your son’s ability to solve problems using visual information, such as pictures and diagrams, will be determined. He might, for example, have to work out which pictured set of blocks could be used to build a given shape.
- Verbal Reasoning: Your son’s problem-solving skills using written information, such as letters and words, will be evaluated. He might, for example, have to select the two words that are closest in meaning from two groups of words by selecting one word from each group.
- Puzzles and Problem-Solving: Your son must answer questions that involve interactive puzzles. He will need to use his resilience to work out the answers methodically, showing that he can focus on tasks.
- English: Your son’s reading skills will be assessed using questions on a passage that could be fiction or non-fiction. He must demonstrate that he can understand the passage and make inferences. Your son will also answer questions that test the standard of his spelling, punctuation and grammar.
We understand that preparing for an entrance exam can be challenging, which is why we have some suggestions to help you in the section below.
Tips to Help Your Child Prepare for the Haberdashers’ Boys’ School Year 7 Entrance Exam
We recommend the following so that your son feels fully prepared for the Habs Boys 11+ entrance exam:
- Start study sessions well before the entrance exam
Starting study sessions well in advance of the 11 plus entrance exam will mean your son has plenty of time to learn what he needs to learn and address any weak areas he might have. It will help him feel calm and confident, avoiding the pressure of last-minute cramming.
- Keep study sessions short
Research has shown that children around the age of 10 can typically focus effectively for about 30 minutes at a time. This means lengthy study sessions are not advisable. Short sessions will also feel more manageable and can be fitted in around your son’s hobbies and relaxation time.
- Read regularly
Reading will help your son develop his reading and writing skills and spark his imagination and creativity. It is hard to emphasise enough how beneficial reading is. Plus, it is fun!
- Have a growth mindset
A growth mindset is the belief that our abilities can improve when we dedicate time and effort to developing them. Believing that he can enhance his abilities will keep your son motivated and make him realise that his study sessions are worth it. Praise him for his efforts and all his successes, no matter how small.
- Develop problem-solving skills
Playing board games and completing word and number puzzles all help with developing problem-solving skills. Why not have regular game sessions together? Your son will be learning without even realising it!
- Adopt a healthy lifestyle
Exercising, sleeping well and eating a healthy diet will support your son’s concentration, memory and overall wellbeing, giving him the energy and focus needed to flourish during the exam preparation period.
- Revise Year 5 work
Going through all of his maths and English schoolwork will provide your son with a strong foundation of knowledge, which he will need for some of the questions that he will encounter in the online assessment. It will also boost his confidence for future learning.
- Use practice tests
Working his way through our Quest online practice tests will give your son the chance to become familiar with the exam format and question types that will come up. With answers and clear explanations provided, each practice test will help him build confidence and strengthen his skills so that he feels fully prepared for the Quest online entrance exam.
