Introduction
Have you been thinking about applying for a place in Year 7 at The King Alfred School for your child? If so, read on to find out about the school, including the Year 7 admissions process, details about the CEM Select assessment and how to prepare for it.
The King Alfred School is an independent school for boys and girls aged 4-18. It was founded in 1898 and is located next to Hampstead Heath. What sets it apart from many other schools is that its students call staff by their first names and do not wear uniforms. Additionally, the rules are limited to just essential ones. This approach gives pupils the freedom to be themselves.
Why Apply for Year 7 Entry at The King Alfred School for Your Child?
There are many reasons for picking this establishment for your child, including the following:
1. The school will provide your child with a superb education. In 2024, 55.4% of GCSE grades were in the impressive 9-7 range, and 56.3% of A-Level grades were A*-A.
2. Your child will develop holistically, with their personal development considered just as important as their academic development.
3. Pastoral care is taken very seriously at King Alfred. Small class sizes mean staff will get to know your child well and be in a strong position to offer appropriate support and guidance when necessary. Additionally, your child can access a counselling service and talk to trained peer mentors.
4. King Alfred has an excellent extra-curricular programme, meaning your child can develop their existing talents and discover new ones. Getting involved in a range of activities will help them grow into an accomplished and confident young person.
5. When your child is in Year 8, they will participate in the Village Project, which involves Year 8 pupils building a small ‘village’ on the school campus and living there for a week. It is a unique opportunity for Year 8 pupils to develop resilience, independence and creativity.

You will also be able to view the facilities.
2. The next step in the admissions process for 11+ entry to King Alfred is registering your child using the online form. You will also need to pay the non-refundable registration fee, which is currently £100, and submit your child’s Year 5 school report. The deadline is in September when your child is in Year 6.
3. Your child will be invited to an assessment day in October of Year 6. You can expect this day to comprise the following:
-
- CEM Select test
- Creative task
4. If your child performs well on the first assessment day, they will be invited back for a second day in November of Year 6. You will need to fill out an online form and submit two pieces of your child’s work at this point. The second assessment day will include the following:
-
- Group interviews
- Team-building activities
- Creative writing task
Additionally, King Alfred will request a reference from your child’s current school.
1. If your child does well on the second assessment day, you will be invited to King Alfred with them for a brief interview in January of Year 6.
2. Offers are made in January, soon after the interview. If your child is offered a place, you will need to accept it by the given deadline and pay the deposit (one term’s fee). The deposit is refunded minus any unpaid fees when your child finishes their education at King Alfred.
Please be aware, King Alfred will offer places to children who can access its curriculum, make the most of all the school has to offer and whose parents support the school’s aims and beliefs. King Alfred does look to have a mixed-ability intake.

King Alfred School: CEM Select Online Assessment for Year 7 Entry
What Does the Year 7 King Alfred Online Entrance Test Comprise?
The online assessment applicants will take for Year 7 (11+) entry is the CEM Select. The test assesses your child’s verbal, non-verbal and numerical reasoning.
- The verbal reasoning questions test your child’s vocabulary, including their ability to make sense of what they are reading and make inferences.
- The non-verbal reasoning questions test your child’s ability to recognise shapes and match patterns. Spatial awareness is important in these questions.
- The numerical reasoning questions will test your child’s knowledge of mathematical concepts, their ability to manipulate numbers and their problem-solving skills.
The CEM Select online assessment has the following methods to answer questions that your child may not have come across before:
- Drag and drop: this involves using the mouse or trackpad to drag and then drop an answer into the correct place on the computer screen.
- Auto-complete: this involves starting to type your answer into the space on the screen. If you start typing the correct answer, the computer will finish it for you, meaning you can move on to the next question.
- Multiple-choice: this involves using the mouse or trackpad to select the correct answer from a group of answer choices.
