Introduction

Set in the centre of the beautiful city of Cambridge, The Leys is a successful co-ed day and boarding school. Its motto is In Fide Fiducia (In Faith, Trust), underpinning a warm Christian ethos that caters for pupils holistically. The Leys has educated a plethora of notable alumni who have left their mark in various fields and disciplines, including media, business and academia. [1]

The academic provision is supported by a robust curriculum, equipping pupils with vital skills in the areas of languages, classics, humanities and technology, amongst others. Teachers are dedicated to providing inspirational teaching, encouraging learners to enhance both their study habits and intellectual development through active engagement in in-class activities.

The exceptional academic capabilities of The Leys’ students are clearly reflected in their recent GCSE results, with a significant 75% of all grades achieved being within the superior 9-7 range. Such a strong academic performance provides the entire learning community with substantial reasons for both celebration and pride.

Moreover, the school’s enduring reputation as a high-performing institution is underscored by the impressive achievements of its recent leavers. Their successful applications to prestigious universities, including Bath, Durham, Exeter, Oxford and St Andrews, have enabled them to continue their prosperous routes to promising careers.

School trivia: The Leys co-curricular provision is unparalleled. Particular emphasis is placed on sports, with the school featuring a vast number of sporting facilities on its campus, including three grass tennis courts, a 25-metre indoor pool, an indoor climbing wall, a purpose-built boat house, six rugby pitches and a boxing gallery. [2]

The Leys School 13 Plus (13+) Early Admissions Process for Boarding Pupils

The Leys hosts Open Mornings on Saturdays, when prospective families can experience the school’s dynamic learning atmosphere. These events include guided tours and informal meetings with faculty members and usually begin with a welcome speech from the Head.

Additionally, the school arranges Small Group Visits. These are structured similarly to Open Mornings but offer a more personal experience by typically limiting attendance to ten families per session. If you are unable to attend any of these events, you can schedule a private visit through the admissions office.

For potential boarding students who want to take the pre-test in Year 6 to obtain a place in Year 9, the first step in the admissions process is to register. The registration form is available on this page and must be accompanied by a payment of a £150 non-refundable fee.

The pre-test needs to be completed by the end of March of Year 6 (the exact date to be agreed between you, your child’s current school and The Leys). On the basis of performance in this assessment and the quality of a report from your child’s current school, an offer may be made.

Please note that if an offer is made and accepted, The Leys will seek a confidential reference from your child’s current school in Year 8 and contact you to arrange an interview with The Leys’ Head. No further assessments are sat unless your child wishes to apply for a scholarship.

The Leys offers a range of scholarships to acknowledge exceptional talent in the areas of Academic ability, Art, Drama, Music, Choral, STEM and Sports.

Students applying for more than one scholarship category are automatically eligible for consideration for a Neil White (all-rounder) scholarship. This award is designed for pupils who demonstrate exceptional talent in two or three different areas and exhibit leadership potential. Preference is given to candidates who are interested in boarding.

Each of these scholarships provides up to a 5% reduction in fees, which remains constant regardless of the number of scholarships a student receives. Additionally, these awards can be combined with a means-tested bursary for greater fee reductions (up to 100% of the fees).

Means-tested bursaries are available to families experiencing financial hardship. The value of these awards varies from 5% to 100% of the fees, depending on the level of financial need. Throughout the bursary evaluation process, your child’s academic potential and their compatibility with The Leys’ ethos, as showcased during the admissions process, will be a key consideration. The school’s specific criteria for bursary awards are detailed in the Guidance on Means-Tested Bursaries document, found here.
