Established in 1875, The Leys School is a co-educational, independent school in Cambridge. It provides day and boarding places to students aged between 11 and 18. The Leys School was originally a boys’ school and became co-educational in the 1980s. The school is a close-knit community and has a strong focus on providing good pastoral care. It’s steeped in history and blends its traditional values with a modern approach to education.
How to Apply for 13 Plus Entry to The Leys School (Boarders)
Before applying for a Year 9 place at The Leys school, parents and prospective students are encouraged to attend an Open Morning. They take place on Saturdays throughout the school year and offer parents the chance to see the school in full operation. The Leys’ Open Mornings are very popular and spaces are limited. Parents should book in advance. For more information on arranging a visit to the school, please see the Visiting page on the school website.
The Leys School has approximately 100 pupils in Year 9. Around 60% are boarders or home boarders and 40% are day pupils.
To apply for a place at the school, parents need to complete the registration form on behalf of their child and pay a £100 registration fee. After registering, reports are requested from the pupil’s previous school.
In the Spring Term of Year 6, all registered prospective boarding students are invited to take the ISEB Common Pretest Assessment, prior to joining the school in Year 9. As part of the entry process, pupils are also required to attend an interview with the Headteacher.
For more information on the admissions process for Year 9 boarders, please read the school’s Steps to Year 9 Entry document. The Admissions Office can also be contacted on 01223 508904 and by email at [email protected]

How to Prepare for The Leys School Pretest
When it comes to preparing for the ISEB Common Pretest, it helps to be organised. At Pretest Plus, we recommend that parents create a study schedule with their child that focuses on activities that cover the four core areas of the test: English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
After some initial revision, our online pretest practice tests and courses can help familiarise children with the layout of the test and help them put theory into practice. Each of our tests contain questions similar to those that will come up in the pretest assessment.
Not only do our tests help and courses students identify questions types, but they also provide detailed answers and explanations, which parents can review with their child.
When completed under exam conditions, our online tests can also help improve students’ time management skills by getting them used to answering questions quickly and under pressure. Ranking statistics are also provided to give parents an indication of their child’s relative performance.
Our Pretest practice tests (and courses) are tried and tested. Tens of thousands of students have already used them to prepare successfully for the ISEB Common Pre-test.
