Introduction
Founded in 1553, Tonbridge School is an independent day and boarding school for boys. Situated in Tonbridge, Kent, the school educates around 800 boys, aged between 13 and 18. Occupying 150 acres of land, the school building is based on the edge of Tonbridge, with some houses spread throughout the town.
Since its foundation, the school has been rebuilt twice on the same site. For an insight into what it’s like to study at Tonbridge School, take a look at this promotional video:
How to Apply for 13 Plus Entry to Tonbridge School
Before registering at Tonbridge, prospective students and parents are encouraged to attend an Open Morning, or arrange an individual visit to the school. The Open Mornings are informal visits that are held each term. Prospective applicants will take a tour of the school, guided by current pupils. Parents and applicants will also have the opportunity to meet with members of staff. To arrange an individual visit to the school, parents should contact the Admissions Office on 01732 365555, or email [email protected].
After visiting the school, parents can register their child by completing the Tonbridge Registration form and paying a non-refundable registration fee of £200. Parents are advised to register their son at least three years before the date of entry.
The Tonbridge School 13 Plus Pretest Assessment
Prior to proposed entry, applicants are invited to sit the ISEB Common Pretest and take part in an assessment afternoon at the school in the Autumn term of Year 6. A report is also requested from the Headteacher of the applicant’s current school.
Candidates with the strongest profile will receive an unconditional offer of entry to the school in Year 9. Those who present a ‘sufficiently strong’ profile will receive a conditional offer, inviting them to sit a further assessment, which takes place at Tonbridge during the Summer term of Year 7.
Tonbridge School Admissions Criteria
There are around 145 Year 9 places available at Tonbridge each year. Students who have accepted a conditional offer are invited to take an entrance examination at Tonbridge in the Summer term, 16 months prior to entry.
Unconditional offers are made to the top performing candidates, with a third group offered a place on the school’s reserve list.
If an unconditional offer is accepted, the Final Entry Form needs to be submitted, alongside an admission fee of £2,000. At this stage, boarding pupils are able to state a preference for specific Houses. Further details of the House allocation process can be found
How to Prepare for the Tonbridge School Pretest
As 13 Plus, entry to Tonbridge School is competitive, students need to start preparing for the pretest assessment early. The sooner pupils start preparing, the more time they’ll have to improve any weak areas.
At Pretest Plus, we publish online pretest practice tests and courses that help students become familiar with the test layout, and the types of questions they may be asked on the day. Practice tests and courses can help identify strengths and weaknesses, allowing for more focused and efficient exam preparation.
As the pretest exam approaches, we’d advise that students take our online pretest practice tests under exam conditions. This will help them get used to working under time pressure.
Taking the time to prepare for the Tonbridge School pretest by using online practice tests should help give your child an advantage over the competition. Our tests cover all four assessed subjects: Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, Maths and English. After completing a test, students will be provided with instant feedback on their score, and will have the opportunity to read detailed explanations for each question.
