Uppingham School 13 Plus (13+) Deferred Entry Admissions Process

Uppingham School hosts Visiting Days in the Spring and Autumn terms for prospective families. During these events, you and your child can ask questions about the admissions process and meet senior staff members. Visiting Days commence with a presentation from the Head, proceed with a tour of the facilities and conclude with refreshments. Booking of places is made through this page

Registration forms should be submitted with a payment of a £200 registration fee. The deadline for this is usually in May of Year 6.

The deferred entry admissions process includes pre-tests, taken between September and December of Year 7. Places are allocated on the basis of performance in these assessments and a quality reference from the applicant’s current school. Please note that your child will also be asked to complete a creative writing task and attend an interview with a member of Uppingham staff. Offers are conditional on passing further tests in Year 8.

Namely, one year before entry, your child will sit a second round of assessments: common entrance or the school’s own papers. Uppingham also offers an option for students to sit academic scholarship papers. Subject to your child’s successful performance, you will be asked to complete an acceptance form for the Year 9 place and pay a deposit.

Uppingham offers various awards to recognise talent and achievement in the areas of Academia, Music, Art, Textiles, DT, Sport, Drama and All Rounder (The Thring Award).

Academic awards are offered following success in the scholarship examinations. Interviews and references are also part of the process. Thring scholarships are awarded to standout candidates who demonstrate passion, leadership and the potential to make a unique contribution to life at Uppingham. They either already hold significant roles in their current schools or have evident potential, recognised by their current Head, to become a Thring Scholar.

Families in need of financial assistance can apply for a bursary. These are granted based on confidential financial assessments and are reviewed annually to accommodate any changes in your financial situation. Please be aware that a limited number of bursaries will be available. For further information on bursaries, please visit this page.
