Introduction

 

Wilmington Grammar School for Girls (WGSG), previously known as the Grammar School for Girls Wilmington, is a selective school in Kent. It has academy status and has been rated as ‘outstanding by OFSTED. [1]

 

The range of academic and non-academic subjects delivered at WGSG is impressive. As part of the curriculum, students take lessons in art, geography, mathematics, physics, biology, history, MFL, RS, chemistry, computer science, music, technology, English, PE, PSHE and finance. Furthermore, they get to choose from either French or Mandarin in Year 7. 

 

The teaching provision aims to initiate intellectual curiosity, encouraging girls to ask ‘Big Questions’ and follow the principle of ‘depth before breadth’. Proportionally, alongside a stimulating academic education, WGSG offers over 50 different enrichment activities and organises trips and excursions on a regular basis. Overseas destinations have included Germany, Belgium and Iceland, as well as a number of UK-based museums, parks, theatres and universities. [2]

Wilmington Grammar School for Girls In-Year Entry (12 Plus & 13 Plus) Admissions Information

 

Wilmington Grammar School for Girls standard entry point is 11 Plus. However, the school also accepts applications from pupils interested in In-Year (Late) Entry. To assess pupils for In-Year entry, Wilmington Grammar for Girls administers the CAT4 online test and papers for Maths,  English and MFL. 

 

The Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4) covers four subject areas, each of them evaluating pupils’ Reasoning skills though standardised assessments. 

 

These tests will be taken at Wilmington Grammar School for Girls at one of the three testing dates set by the school. If you wish your child to be considered for the assessments, you should apply using the In Year Common Application Form.

 

In order to be offered a place, your daughter must gain a standardised score of 115 and above (in the CAT4). 

 

If the school has reached its Published Admission Number (PAN) in the year group, your daughter may be placed on a waiting list. Under these circumstances, priority will be given to:

 

  • Children in the Local Authority Care;
  • Children whose siblings attend the school;
  • Children whose siblings attend Wilmington Grammar for Boys;
  • Children who live nearest to the school.

As part of the assessment process for late transfer entry, your child will be asked to complete the CAT4 assessment. 

 

Based on performance in this test, schools can judge pupils’ progress over the academic year and hence decide on their setting and streaming (according to ability).

  • The Verbal Reasoning section examines problem-solving skills using words.

 

  • The Non-Verbal Reasoning section covers problem-solving using shapes and patterns, rather than words.

 

  • The Spatial Reasoning section assesses your child’s ability to identify shapes and how they change. 

 

  • The Quantitative Reasoning section tests their ability to solve problems using numbers.
