Abingdon School is an independent day and boarding school for boys in Oxfordshire. The twentieth-oldest independent school in the country, Abingdon has a rich history and a long tradition of educating notable professionals, hence its alumni list is nothing short of impressive. The school is also recognised for its broad academic and non-academic offerings, delivered at a superb standard.
Aimed at maximising pupils’ learning potential, Abingdon offers a forward-looking curriculum, successfully combined with the school’s traditional values. Besides outstanding teaching for mathematics, sciences, humanities, languages, the arts and technology, the school offers the Be More Griffen course, thanks to which students in the Lower School have the opportunity to listen to inspiring visiting speakers throughout the year.
Abingdon’s Other Half programme comprises an extensive range of over 150 extra-curricular activities, providing boys with abundant opportunities to enhance their skills and artistic talents. With everything from CCF, orchestra and ceramics to sailing, judo and politics on offer, the programme encourages boys to explore and cultivate various aspects of their identities, rather than limiting themselves to a single interest.
The school recently produced fantastic GCSE results. Namely, 81.4% of all grades were in the superior 9-7 range, underscoring Abingdon’s reputation as a place where academic excellence is fostered in conjunction with intellectual resilience. Boys’ hard work and determination typically leads to them securing places at their top-choice universities, including many renowned Russell Group institutions.
School trivia: At Abingdon, students are required to adhere to a strict dress code. Coloured T-shirts worn underneath school shirts are not allowed, especially if they are visible at the collar. The rules mandate that shirts must be neatly tucked in at the waist, with top buttons fastened and ties correctly worn. Additionally, students are expected to maintain clean-shaven faces. Exceptions to this rule are only made for religious reasons, and such exemptions must be approved by the Head.
Abingdon School 11 Plus (11+) First Year Admissions Process
Abingdon recommends that both you and your child visit the campus to experience the school’s atmosphere before registering for Year 7 entry. You have several options to explore the setting, including private appointments and Discover Abingdon events, the latter of which are specifically designed for parents and include a Q&A session with the Head and other staff members, as well as a tour of the facilities. More details are available on this page.
To commence the application process for entry to Abingdon School, you should complete an online registration form. Upon completion, you’ll be guided to a payment page to pay the £150 non-refundable registration fee.
Abingdon School is known for being academically selective, and entry is primarily based on student performance in the 11+ entrance exam, held in January of Year 6. Boys who perform well in this competitive exam are then short-listed and invited for an interview, where they’re encouraged to discuss their academic and non-academic interests.
Abingdon requires a reference from each applicant’s current Head so that the school can better understand every boy’s behavioural record. Only candidates with positive behaviour will be considered for admission. Offers are usually sent out approximately three weeks after the entrance exam, with a confirmation deadline set in March.
At 11+ level, the school offers both Academic and Music scholarships. The Academic scholarships include John Roysse Awards, extended to pupils who excel in the entrance tests and interviews. Griffen Awards recognise all-round excellence across various assessments. Head’s Awards are Academic scholarships that acknowledge a specific strength or talent.
For Music Scholarships, candidates undergo an audition and interview, and ideally, they should be proficient in two instruments, with a Grade 5-6 standard in at least one.
The school also provides means-tested bursaries for day boys, covering up to 100% of fees. If you’re interested in applying for a bursary, you should indicate this on the registration form. You will then need to complete a Bursary Application Form and provide documents detailing your financial situation. Additional details are available on this page.
