The ISEB Common Pre-Test is used by many independent senior schools as part of their admissions process. The test is designed to provide an overview of a pupil’s current attainment level and future potential. We’ve written about the pre-testing process in more detail in our post: The ISEB Common Pretest: What You Need to Know.
At Pretest Plus, we believe that students can improve their performance in the ISEB Common Pre-Test with a little preparation. That’s why we publish online pretest practice tests that help familiarise students with the test format. In this post, we outline the benefits of using practice tests as part of a student’s pretest preparation.
They provide an Indication of a Child’s Current Ability
Before embarking on a study schedule, it’s useful for parents to know where their child’s current ability lies. At the end of each of our practice tests, parents are presented with their child’s score and ranking statistics. They can then revise each question to see if they notice any trends in the types of questions that their child gets right or wrong. With this information, parents can then create a focused study schedule that will raise their child’s overall test score.
By introducing our practice tests into a student’s revision early, students will have more time to work on improving their weaker areas. All of our pretest practice tests come with detailed explanations of each answer to help students learn and improve.
They Familiarise Students with the Test Format
Students who have never seen a test similar to the ISEB Common Pre-Test may be at a disadvantage to those who have. Our tests are designed to replicate the look and format of the actual pretest assessment, and can help students become familiar with the types of questions they may be asked on test day.
The more experience a child has in taking online practice tests, the better they’ll become at knowing how to answer specific question types. Being familiar with the test layout can also save students valuable time on the day as they’ll know exactly what to expect.
They Help Develop Time Management Skills
For most pupils in Year 6, the ISEB Common Pre-Test will be their first experience of sitting a test under exam conditions. It’s one thing to have the knowledge to take the test, but another to be able to answer the questions quickly under time pressure.
They Help Monitor Student Progress
Preparing for the pretest without using practice assessments makes it very difficult for the parent to monitor their child’s overall progress. Revising each of the exam topics on their own won’t necessarily help improve their child’s performance.
We’d suggest that students should take our first practice test before they begin studying, so that parents know where their current attainment level is. As their studying progresses, our second test will show how they’ve improved. Further practice tests can be used if necessary to gain more experience under exam conditions and provide a realistic overview of how they might perform in the actual pretest.
They Improve Students’ Confidence
Students who feel confident walking into the pretest are more likely to perform well. Our tests provide students with the opportunity to put their knowledge into practice. As they start to see improvements in their practice test scores, their confidence will improve too.
Having practice test scores to look back over that show a marked improvement over time can provide a confidence boost ahead of test day.
Our Online Pretest Practice Tests
Our practice tests cover each of the four assessed subjects in the pretest: Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, Maths and English.
After completing each test, students and parents will be provided with instant feedback on their score and will have the opportunity to read detailed explanations for each question.
Our tests also provide statistical averages to give an indication of relative performance. You can buy our online pretest practice tests by following the links below:
