Introduction

Dauntsey’s School is an independent co-ed day and boarding school for pupils aged 11–18 in the village of West Lavington, Wiltshire. Established in 1542, it occupies a beautiful 65-acre campus and has a rich selection of top-notch facilities, including a swimming pool, tennis courts and a climbing wall. [1]

Dauntsey’s boasts an admirable academic reputation. The curriculum comprehensively introduces pupils to a range of relevant disciplines, catering to their interests and specific learning styles. Covering everything from science and technology to humanities and social sciences, lessons are tailored to inspire students while producing strong examination results.

Non-academically, the school’s provision is characterised by both variety and flexibility. The co-curricular programme offers many activities to boost pupils’ skillset, including:

  • Amnesty International Club
  • Bee Keeping Club
  • Computing Club
  • Dauntsey’s Shakespeare Competition
  • Equestrian Club
  • Sailing Club. [2]

Underpinned by a well-coordinated House system, the pastoral care system fosters a feeling of belonging and collective responsibility among pupils. Staff actively collaborate with parents to ensure that the mental, physical and spiritual needs of the cohort are met.

The school’s ethos centres on the motto Honor Deo (Honour God), creating a lively and enriching educational environment. While students are encouraged to take advantage of the privileges of a quality education, they are also instilled with a sense of empathy towards those less fortunate, fostering a deep appreciation for both their own opportunities and the struggles others may be facing.

Dauntsey’s School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions Process

The best way to familiarise your child with everything on offer at Dauntsey’s School, including the extensive facilities, is to attend their Open Mornings. Taking place in May and September, these include guided tours of the campus and an introductory speech from the Head, as well as delicious lunch. Booking is made through the school’s website

As part of the admissions process, you will be asked to register your child for the 11+ exam and pay the £175 non-refundable fee. The deadline for this is in October of the year preceding entry.

The 11+ admissions procedure comprises the following:

  • A bespoke online test
  • A creative writing exercise
  • An interview with a member of senior staff

The entrance examinations are held in January of the calendar year of entry, while interviews are conducted later in the same month.

Dauntsey’s School sends out offers in February, to be accepted with a payment of a £1,000 deposit. If your child has a particular aptitude in the areas of academic, sports or performing arts, they can apply for a scholarship. These awards are valued at 10% of fees.

For those families who may struggle with paying fees, Dauntsey’s School provides financial support of up to 100%. These awards are known as bursaries and they are means-tested, which means they are awarded following a thorough evaluation of the family’s financial circumstances, such as gross income, assets, savings, etc. More details are available on this page
