Introduction

Gordonstoun School is a co-ed (day and boarding) independent school in Moray, Scotland. Occupying a 150-acre campus, it has educated many notable professionals, aristocrats and members of the Royal Family, including the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. [1]

Preparing students for a bright future, Gordonstoun offers a competitive curriculum that ranges from French, Business Studies and mathematics to science, Greek and computing. Pupils’ progress is regularly communicated to parents, who closely collaborate with teaching staff to ensure strong outcomes.

Outdoor opportunities further support the cohort’s learning, allowing them to engage in exciting activities such as sailing, kayaking, orienteering, mountain biking, skiing and surfing, among others. If they decide to partake in Duke of Edinburgh pursuits, they will be led by experienced staff who set the highest possible standards for all activities and persons involved. [2]

Centred on character education, the Gordonstoun offering enables students to reach their full potential without minimising their consideration for others in the process. The reputable ethos instils in them a love of diversity and a global perspective, thus enabling them to acknowledge and effortlessly navigate the multicultural aspects of contemporary existence.

Although the school does not host Open Events, it strongly advises prospective families to schedule a private visit, involving a tour of facilities, meetings with staff and delicious lunch. The visit should ideally take place on a working day so that you and your child can catch a glimpse of the many activities on campus.

The 13+ admissions process includes a request for references from your child’s current school, as well as a formal exam. To register your child for the assessment, you will be asked to submit a registration form together with a non-refundable fee.

If your child wishes to apply for a scholarship, they will be asked to sit a bespoke online test similar to CAT4, set to take place in the summer between Year 7 and Year 8.

Once awarded, scholarships are reviewed annually, with the possibility of remaining valid throughout your child’s career at Gordonstoun. Scholars are prioritised in the allocation of means tested awards, called bursaries, which may provide a substantial reduction in fees.
