Introduction

Bromsgrove School is a co-educational day and boarding school for pupils aged 2-18. Founded in 1553, Bromsgrove School has a rich history, which it is rightly proud of. However, the school is also proud of the progressive and dynamic education it provides to its pupils. The aim is to enable pupils to be the best they can be. Old Bromsgrovians include John Moody, an opera director; Greg Smith, a British politician; and Lucilla Wright, a former member of the England and Great Britain women’s field hockey teams.

Academically, Bromsgrove School has high expectations, and pupils achieve outstanding exam results. Pupils’ learning is enhanced by the superb facilities that include eighteen new science laboratories, a library and a humanities block. A wide range of GCSE options are available to pupils, and pre-GCSE lessons allow pupils to choose the right subjects for them.

The extra-curricular programme at Bromsgrove School is extensive, with the school believing that life outside of the classroom is every bit as important as life inside the classroom. There are numerous clubs and societies pupils can join, such as Debating Society, Choral Society and Drama Club. In addition to this, the school arranges exchanges, trips and tours, meaning pupils can experience other cultures while having fun and growing in confidence.

Pastoral care is very important to Bromsgrove School. Their Wellbeing Hub exemplifies the commitment the school has to ensuring pupils have the support they need if they experience any emotional difficulties. Staff at the hub are on hand to help those in need and to promote positive mental health and wellbeing in the school community. Furthermore, a full-time Designated Safeguarding Lead deals with concerns regarding any aspect of a child’s welfare.

This will enable you to see if the school is a good fit for your child. You can arrange to attend the Open Morning in October or book a personal visit. This can be done via the online form.

The next step is to register your child before the end of October of Year 8 by completing the online registration form (please contact the admissions team for information regarding the form) and paying the registration fee (£100 for a day place and £200 for a boarding place). Once you have submitted the form, Bromsgrove School will request a confidential report from your child’s current school. This report will help Bromsgrove School decide if your child will be able to access their curriculum and make the most of all they have to offer.

The 13+ entrance examination will be held at Bromsgrove School in November of Year 8. It consists of a Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4) and a Creative Writing paper. In addition to this, 13+ candidates will need to submit a video presentation, with a length of no more than three minutes. The video will need to be submitted by the deadline in November, which is a few days before the entrance exam. Candidates will be told the title/subject of the video presentation a week before the submission deadline.

Offers will be made in the Lent (Spring) term, and any offer needs to be accepted within twenty-one days of receiving it. A £500 acceptance fee will need to be paid for a day place and £3,000 for a boarding place. This acceptance deposit is refunded when your child finishes their education at Bromsgrove School.

Bromsgrove School: Year 9 (13+) Scholarships and Bursaries

13+ candidates can apply for the following scholarships:

  • Academic
  • Music
  • Art
  • Drama
  • Sports

To apply for a scholarship, you should complete the scholarship application form, in addition to the registration form. Scholarship candidates need to excel in their chosen area and perform well in the entrance exam to be considered for an award. Those that do so will be invited back to Bromsgrove School for an interview. An exhibition can be awarded to a pupil who is deemed to be not quite at the scholarship level.

Please note that the Academic, Music, Art, Drama and Sports Scholarships only carry a small financial award. However, Foundation Scholarships (worth up to 50% of the day fees) are available to 13+ applicants. They are awarded to academically able pupils who need financial assistance to attend Bromsgrove School. Preference is given to pupils from Bromsgrove and the surrounding area.

A limited number of bursaries are available at the 13+ entry point. These are means-tested and are for pupils who would thrive at Bromsgrove School but whose families need help to pay the school’s fees. To apply for a bursary, the school recommends you submit the bursary application form at the same time as the registration form. You will need to supply the school with details about your financial circumstances.

Bromsgrove School: Year 9 (13+) Online CAT4

The CAT4 consists of multiple-choice questions that cover Verbal reasoning, Non-Verbal reasoning, Quantitative reasoning and Spatial reasoning.

  • The Verbal reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to solve problems using words.
  • The Non-Verbal reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to solve problems by analysing visual information.
  • The Quantitative reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to solve problems using numbers.
  • The Spatial reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to understand how objects can move in a three-dimensional world.

Given that your child will be in Year 8 when they take the CAT4, they will take Level E.

Your child’s performance in the CAT4 will enable Bromsgrove School to see if your child is equipped to cope with the school’s challenging curriculum. If your child does secure a place, their result will allow the school to monitor their progress over the academic year. Additionally, the school can look at any areas of weakness revealed by the test and personalise teaching as a result of this.

How to Prepare for the Bromsgrove School Year 9 (13+) CAT4 Level E

At Pretest Plus, we believe that considered preparation will significantly boost a student’s confidence and enhance their performance in competitive entrance examinations.

Working their way through our CAT4 Level E Practice Tests will help your child be prepared for the CAT4E in the following ways:

  • There will be no surprises on the day that might negatively impact their performance, as they will be familiar with the CAT4 format.
  • They will be used to working under time pressure.
  • They can use the answers and detailed explanations to understand where and why they lost points, helping to prevent them from making similar mistakes in the actual test.
  • They can identify their strong areas and weaker areas, meaning they can allocate their study time appropriately, focusing on areas that require extra attention.

Improving across all the areas that will be tested in the CAT4E will mean your child is well-equipped to access every aspect of Bromsgrove School’s extensive curriculum. Furthermore, the more advanced their reasoning abilities are, the more successful they will be in navigating the challenges of higher education and beyond.
