Introduction

St. Joseph’s Institution International School (SJI) first welcomed pupils in 2007, providing an education to boys and girls in Grades 7-12 (UK equivalent of Years 8-13). The Elementary School opened the following year, extending the provision to children from Prep 1 to Grade 6 (Reception to Year 7). SJI is a Lasallian Catholic school; therefore, faith is central to the school’s ethos. SJI welcomes not just Catholic children but children from many different faiths and has a Religious Education programme designed to make each child’s faith stronger, no matter what that faith.

Academically, St. Joseph’s Institution International has high standards. Teachers are expected, amongst other things, to deliver engaging lessons, stretch pupils and offer constructive feedback. The curriculum is broad and balanced so that pupils receive a truly holistic education: the arts, music, drama, sports and service are all part of the educational journey at the High School.

The co-curricular programme at SJI is extensive, enabling pupils to develop existing skills and discover new talents. All pupils are encouraged to get involved. Activities on offer include fencing, darts, coding, gardening and Model United Nations. Participation means students grow in confidence and become well-rounded young people.

Pastoral care is taken very seriously at SJI, with all staff committed to providing a safe and secure environment in which pupils can thrive. Every pupil is allocated a Tutor. The Tutor will get to know their tutees very well, which means Tutors are a valuable source of assistance and guidance. Furthermore, Learning Coordinators ensure that Tutors and Heads of Grade provide appropriate support. In addition to this, SJI has four highly qualified counsellors, who tailor their support based on each individual student’s needs.

As the first step of the standard admissions process, St. Joseph’s Institution International High School warmly invites you to visit the school so you can see for yourself what it has to offer. They hold an annual Open House for this purpose. You can also take a virtual tour of SJI.

If you decide the school is a good fit for your child and you want to apply for a place for Grade 7, you should complete the online application form and pay the $2725 non-refundable registration fee. Applications open in February or early March of Grade 6 and close before mid-May of Grade 6.

All standard applicants will sit an entrance examination. This comprises a CEM Baseline test (CEM Select) and an English test (Oxford Online Placement). After sitting the admissions tests, all candidates will be interviewed by a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

Based on your child’s performance in the entrance examination and interview, they may be offered a place. However, the school will also be looking to see if your child fulfils other admissions criteria, such as being a resident of Singapore, before making any decision. They will also give priority to certain candidates. If your child is offered a place, you will receive this offer typically before mid-June. Should you decide to accept it, you will need to let the school know before the acceptance deadline. You will also need to pay a non-refundable enrolment fee of $3,815 and a security deposit of $6,000. The security deposit will be refunded when your child has completed Grade 12 at SJI.

For more information about the admissions criteria and which pupils will be given priority, please look at SJI’s Admissions Policy.

Please note that candidates will also be required to sit a language paper in the second language they intend to study at SJI. This is not part of the admissions process: it is used for setting purposes only. Altogether, the entrance examination and language setting paper will take about 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete.

You can apply for this scholarship for Grade 7 entry if your child is already playing football at the junior elite level. This is a merit-based award and not means-tested.

St. Joseph’s Institution International, Singapore: Grade 7 Standard Entrance Examination Format

CEM Baseline Test (CEM Select)

One of the exams that applicants will take for Grade 7 (12+) entry is the CEM Select. It is an online assessment that measures your child’s Verbal, Non-Verbal and Numerical reasoning abilities and is produced by the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM), which is part of Cambridge University Press & Assessment.

The Verbal reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to solve problems using words, with a focus on the maturity of their vocabulary.

The Non-Verbal reasoning questions require your child to solve problems by analysing visual information.

The Numerical reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to solve problems using numbers and arithmetic.

The CEM Select online assessment has the following methods to answer questions, which your child may not have come across before:

  • Drag and drop: this involves using the mouse or trackpad to drag and then drop an answer into the correct place on the computer screen.
  • Auto-complete: this involves starting to type the answer into the space on the screen. If your child starts typing the correct answer, the computer will finish it for them, meaning they can move on to the next question.
  • Multiple-choice: this involves using the mouse or trackpad to select the correct answer from a group of answer choices.

English Test (Oxford Online Placement)

This is the other test your child will take to help the school determine if your child is suitable for their challenging curriculum. It is an online test designed to see how proficient candidates are when it comes to understanding language. It will also assess candidates’ grammar and vocabulary. There is a listening component to this test, which evaluates students’ general listening ability.

St. Joseph’s Institution International, Singapore: Practice Materials for Grade 7 (12+) Standard Entry

These full mock tests are designed to provide your child with highly accurate practice ahead of their CEM Select assessment. Each practice test covers Verbal, Non-Verbal and Numerical reasoning, replicating the modules, timings and question types used in the actual exam.

Each test contains unique content, but they are all pitched at the same difficulty level as the actual assessment. This means you can easily benchmark your child’s progress as they work through the practice tests, quickly identifying their strengths and weaknesses. The practice tests contain six timed modules. These can be completed individually. Once a module is complete, it is marked automatically. Your child will then be able to review it in detail, with answers and explanations provided for every question. Statistical averages based on the scores of other students who have taken the practice test are also provided.
