Introduction

Founded in 1584 by Archdeacon Robert Johnson, Oakham School is one of the largest co-educational boarding and day schools in England. The school’s motto is Quasi cursores vitai lampada tradunt (Like runners, they pass on the torch of life), which is apt because the Oakham of today feels deep gratitude to those who have gone before and a sense of responsibility to those who will come after.

Oakham’s academic curriculum is designed to be engaging and challenging, encouraging pupils to be inquisitive, resilient learners. Superb teaching, small class sizes and excellent facilities, amongst other things, mean that pupils do exceptionally well academically. An impressive 49% of recent GCSE grades were in the 9-7 range.

Pupils joining in Form 3 (Year 9) will follow the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, studying a range of subjects, including languages, humanities and separate sciences. Students will also complete projects that enable them to make connections between subjects, which is an effective way for pupils to develop transferable problem-solving skills.

The co-curricular programme at Oakham School is an important part of school life, enabling pupils to become confident, well-rounded young people as they strengthen their existing skills and discover new talents. Activities and societies on offer include cooking, sailing, Model United Nations and Medical Society. Moreover, there are over 90 trips and tours on offer each year. These allow students to immerse themselves in different cultures and experience life-changing moments.

Pastoral care at Oakham School is exceptional. Caring staff work hard to create a safe and secure environment in which pupils can thrive. The school’s Pastoral Centre, being a base for Oakham’s mental health team, is a testament to the school’s determination to promote mental wellbeing amongst the school body. In addition to this, all Form 3 pupils will do a course in mindfulness.

Oakham School Form 3/Year 9 (13+) Admissions Process

Oakham School warmly invites prospective families to visit the school before registering for a place. This will enable you to experience the atmosphere of the school and decide if it is a good fit for your child.

You can attend their Open Event in May to explore the facilities, meet staff members and current pupils, hear from the Head and ask any questions you have about the admissions process. Places can be booked via the online form on their website. Oakham School is also happy to book individual visits, to be arranged by contacting the admissions team directly. Contact details are given lower down.

If you decide to register your child for a place in Form 3 (Year 9), you need to complete the online registration form. You should submit it along with a £150 registration fee, a copy of your child’s birth certificate, a copy of their passport and a copy of their latest school report. Any specialist reports you have on your child should also be submitted. This needs to be done before the end of November of Year 8 at the very latest. However, early registration is encouraged.

Candidates will take assessments in January of Year 8 and have an interview. Also, the school requires a confidential reference from your child’s current school at this stage. The Oakham School’s assessments consist of the CAT4 (Cognitive Abilities Test) and written papers in English and Maths.

Offers will be made in February. Acceptance of an offer requires payment of a deposit (refunded when your child has completed their education at Oakham). Once your child’s place is confirmed, you will receive a joining pack that contains all the information you need to prepare your child for the start of their education at Oakham. A Familiarisation Day in June and an Induction Day in August or September will help make your child feel relaxed and confident about becoming a pupil at Oakham School.

How to Prepare for the Oakham School 13 Plus (13+) CAT4 Level E

At Pretest Plus, we believe that considered preparation will significantly boost a student’s confidence and enhance their performance in competitive entrance examinations.

Working their way through our CAT4 Level E Practice Tests will help your child be prepared for the CAT4E in the following ways:

  • They will become familiar with the format of the CAT4E, meaning there are no surprises on the day.
  • They will get better at answering questions quickly and accurately when under time pressure.
  • Looking at the answers and detailed explanations for each question, they will learn from any mistakes they make and avoid repeating them in the actual exam.
  • They will be able to identify their strengths and weaknesses, meaning they can then focus on any areas that require improvement.

Improving across all the areas that will be tested in the CAT4E will mean your child is well-equipped to access every aspect of Oakham’s extensive curriculum. Furthermore, the more advanced their reasoning abilities are, the more successful they will be in navigating the challenges of higher education and beyond.
