Introduction

The Webber Independent School is a co-educational independent school in Milton Keynes. It caters for children aged 6 months to 16 years and is named in honour of the urban designer and ‘father of the city’ of Milton Keynes, Melvin M. Webber.

Academically, Webber is excellent. Its most recent ISI report comments on how teachers plan lessons exceptionally well and have high expectations of their pupils. Children are put in sets according to their ability and are given work that challenges them at an appropriate level. Recently, the school’s GCSE pass rate was an impressive 98%.

An extensive extra-curricular programme means that pupils can enhance their existing skills and discover new talents. There are over 50 clubs and activities on offer, such as Bee Club, Army Cadet Force, Gardening Club and Chess Club. Getting involved helps pupils develop into confident, well-rounded young people. Furthermore, Webber believes it is important for children to experience the world around them, so they arrange trips to theatres, museums and galleries. They also give pupils the opportunity to go on residential trips, both in the UK and overseas.

Pastoral care is exemplary at The Webber Independent School. Pupils’ happiness and wellbeing is of utmost importance to each and every member of staff. The values of kindness, respect and tolerance are promoted, helping to create a safe and secure environment in which all pupils can thrive.

The Webber Independent School: Admissions Process for Children in Years 3-11

If you are interested in your child joining Webber, visiting the school is the best place to start. The school warmly invites you to arrange a personalised tour. This will enable you to meet the Head and other members of staff, chat with current pupils and experience what lessons are like at Webber. You should contact the admissions team to book a tour (contact details are provided further down). You can also attend the Open Day that is held in the Autumn term.

If you decide the school is a good fit for your child and you want to apply for a place, you should complete the Enquiry Form or contact the admissions team. You can also arrange a meeting with the Head to talk about your child and how Webber can meet their individual needs.

You will then be sent an Application Pack, which will need to be completed and returned to the Registrar. Once this has been received, and a non-refundable fee of £250 for UK residents (£300 for international students) has been paid, a Taster and Assessment Visit will be arranged for your child, taking place over two days. The dates for this will be arranged at a time that is convenient for you and the school.

Children in Year 3 and above will sit an online Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4) and be interviewed. Your child’s performance in the CAT4 and conduct in the interview, along with a reference from their current school and their last two school reports, will help Webber decide whether to offer them a place.

If your child is offered a place (please note that priority will be given to children who have a sibling already at the school), you will need to accept it within two weeks and pay a refundable deposit of £1,000. A start date will then be confirmed.

If you have any questions about the admissions process, please contact the admissions team.

If your child is in Year 3 or above and you want a place for them at Webber Independent School, they will sit an online assessment called the CAT4. The level they sit depends upon their school year:

Year 3 pupils sit CAT4 Level Y

Year 4 pupils sit CAT4 Level A

Year 6 pupils sit CAT4 Level C

Year 7 pupils sit CAT4 Level D

Year 8 pupils sit CAT4 Level E

Year 9 and 10 pupils sit CAT4 Level F

Year 11 pupils sit CAT4 Level G

Your child’s results in the CAT4 online assessment will help Webber decide whether to offer them a place.

Also, based on performance in this exam, the school can judge successful applicants’ progress over the academic year.

In addition to this, the assessment is an effective way for the school to understand pupils’ strengths and weaknesses so they can personalise learning and adapt teaching.

The Webber Independent School: CAT4 Format

The CAT4 consists of multiple-choice questions that cover Verbal reasoning, Non-Verbal reasoning, Quantitative reasoning and Spatial reasoning.

⦿ The Verbal reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to solve problems using words.

⦿ The Non-Verbal reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to solve problems by analysing visual information.

⦿ The Quantitative reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to solve problems using numbers.

⦿ The Spatial reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to understand how objects can move in a three-dimensional world.

How to Prepare for The Webber Independent School CAT4

At Pretest Plus, we believe that considered preparation will significantly boost a student’s confidence and enhance their performance in competitive entrance examinations.

Working their way through our CAT4 practice tests will help your child be prepared for the CAT4 in the following ways:

  • They will become familiar with the format of the CAT4, meaning there are no surprises on the day.
  • They will get better at answering questions quickly and accurately when under time pressure.
  • Looking at the answers and detailed explanations for each question, they will learn from any mistakes they make and avoid repeating them in the actual exam.
  • They will be able to identify their strengths and weaknesses, meaning they can then focus on any areas that require improvement.

Improving across all the areas that will be tested in the CAT4 will mean your child is well-equipped to access every aspect of Webber’s extensive curriculum.
