Introduction

UKiset is an online assessment used by many UK independent schools as a way of selecting international students for entry. Currently used by over 180 British schools, the assessment is designed to test the ability of international students in comparison to those in the UK in the same age group.

 

In this final article in our UKiset series, we complete our round-up of British senior schools that use the UKiset test.

St Mary’s, Cambridge

An independent girls’ school, which is Christian, of Catholic heritage, and in which girls of all faiths and secular backgrounds are welcomed, St Mary’s School, Cambridge offers boarding and day places to girls aged 4 to 18. Founded in 1898, there are currently around 400 pupils in St Mary’s Senior School housed in grounds adjoined to the Cambridge University Botanic Garden. With an excellent academic record, St Mary’s School also has first class facilities, including a new science hub.

St Swithun’s School

Located in Winchester, St Swithun’s is an independent day, weekly and boarding school for girls aged 3 to 18 years. Founded in 1884, St Swithun’s moved to its current 45-acre campus overlooking the Hampshire Downs in 1931. Over 700 pupils are faced with a challenging academic routine and the girls can enjoy exceptional sporting and recreational facilities when outside of the classroom.

Strathallan School

Founded in 1913, Strathallan School is a co-educational day and boarding school for children aged 9 to 18 years. Based within a 150-acre campus close to Perth in Scotland, over 550 pupils are split across eight houses. Music has remained an important extracurricular activity at Strathallan, due to the availability of a popular choral scholarship, so a large proportion of students play an instrument. Strathallan is the only school in Scotland to have a Royal Marine Cadet Troop.

Stover School

 

Founded on its present site in 1932, Stover School enjoys the rural tranquility of a 64-acre campus based in Newton Abbot, right in the heart of Devon’s countryside. A co-educational Christian school, Stover staff capitalise on the school’s relatively small size by forging strong relationships with its 350 pupils.

The Leys School, Cambridge

Based in Cambridge, The Leys School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school for over 550 pupils aged 11 to 18 years. Despite the school’s traditional values (it was established in 1875), it prides itself on offering a forward-thinking outlook to education. While giving pupils a challenging curriculum to tackle, The Leys School also provides its pupils with a substantial range of cultural, creative and sporting opportunities.

Royal Hospital School

Royal Hospital School (RHS) is a co-educational, independent day and boarding school with strong naval traditions. Approximately 700 pupils aged 11 to 18 years are split into 11 houses in total. Located in Ipswich, Suffolk, RHS students are required to wear Royal Navy uniforms during their time at the school.

Tudor Hall School

 

Founded in 1850, Tudor Hall School is a girls-only independent day and boarding school based in Oxfordshire. Over 330 girls are divided into four houses, with over two thirds choosing to board at the school. Tudor Hall provides excellent pastoral care for its students, working hard to build confident women who have a strong sense of self-respect.

Uppingham School

Located in Rutland, Uppingham School is a co-educational independent school for pupils aged 13 to 18 years. A member of the Rugby Group, this Church of England school was founded in 1584 and currently educates approximately 800 pupils. The school continues to regenerate its facilities and in recent years has opened a new sports centre and theatre.

Walden School

Formerly known as Friends’ School, Walden School is an independent, co-educational school that follows Quaker principles, although today, the school is inclusive of children from all religious backgrounds. Based in Saffron Walden in Essex, the school was first established in 1702 and today, over 370 pupils are educated at the school.

Woodbridge School

Based in Suffolk, Woodbridge School is an independent school and was originally established as a boys’ school in 1577. However, since 1974 it has been co-educational, with its senior school accepting pupils aged 11 to 18 years. Woodbridge plays host to the Combined Cadet Force and pupils are invited to join the Force from Year 9.

Winchester College

Winchester College is one of the oldest independent boarding schools in the UK, having been established in 1382. Open to boys aged 13-18 years, today over 670 students are taught at this Church of England school. Winchester College has a strong academic record and a significant number of pupils consistently go on to some of the best universities in Britain.

Westonbirt School

 

Located close to Tetbury in Gloucestershire, Westonbirt School is an independent day and boarding school for girls aged 11-18 years. Situated within an impressive, 210-acre campus, over 220 girls are divided into five houses. The school enjoys high quality facilities and in recent years has opened a new sports hall, which features an Olympic size swimming pool and is open to the public.

Worth School

 

Based in West Sussex, Worth School was established in 1933 as an all-boys’ school, but opened itself up to girls attending in 2012. The school is located within a Benedictine monastery, Worth Abbey, and sits within a huge 500-acre campus in the countryside. Over 600 pupils aged 11-18 are tasked with a challenging academic workload, but pupils are encouraged to learn music and enjoy a variety of extracurricular activities too.

Wycombe Abbey School

Located within a 160-acre campus in High Wycombe, Wycombe Abbey is an independent girls’ boarding school that consistently reports high academic achievement. The school educates approximately 615 girls and although it works to encourage them to develop academically, it does not neglect extracurricular interests or pastoral care.
