Introduction
Benenden School is an independent school for girls in Kent. Occupying a beautiful 250-acre campus between Cranbrook and Tenterden, it boasts a varied list of notable alumni, including entrepreneurs, journalists and members of royal families worldwide. Benenden is predominantly a boarding school, although a limited number of day places are available. [1]
Its cross-curricular approach to education is underpinned by a relevant academic programme, ranging from languages and mathematics to humanities and natural sciences. Fundamentally, the school aims to mould students into future leaders, maximising their intellectual development and soft and practical skills in line with a profoundly holistic educational strategy.
With over 150 co-curricular activities available, girls have a wide array of options to choose from, ranging from drama and the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) to choir and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE). The sports programme is particularly vibrant, providing numerous opportunities to participate in external sports competitions, such as squash, hockey, rugby and equestrian. [2]
The boarding houses at Benenden offer a secure and nurturing home away from home. Here, girls form lasting friendships, develop compassion and acquire a sense of responsibility for their actions, leading to substantial character growth and personal development.
In addition to all this, learners benefit from an ideal balance in their educational experience: living in a safe and picturesque rural setting while also enjoying regular excursions to the dynamic city of London. The blend of high-quality offerings and enriching experiences outside the classroom ensures a well-rounded and fulfilling school life, which fully adheres to Benenden’s model and motto: A Complete Education.
Benenden School 12 Plus (12+) Entry Admissions Process
Each term, Open Days are organised to give families the opportunity to explore the campus (through tours of the facilities and boarding houses) and to gain a direct understanding of the wide range of educational opportunities available. For a more tailored experience, individual visits can also be arranged. Further details are available on this page.
Ideally, 12+ candidates should be registered with Benenden by the end of Year 5. As part of the admissions process, your child will be asked to sit an online assessment during the Autumn or Spring term of Year 6, followed by a Preview Weekend in April of the same year. During Preview Weekend, your child will sit further tests.
Please be aware that due to the limited number of 12+ places, Benenden School may not be able to provide immediate offers. They will be made as and when spaces become available.
Scholarships for outstanding 12+ applicants are awarded in the following areas:
⦾ Music
Music scholarships are awarded following a successful audition and interview. Assessments take place in January of the calendar year of entry.
⦾ Academic ability
Academic scholarships are allocated to academically strong candidates following further testing in English and Mathematics, as well as an interview and group activities. Assessments take place in February of the calendar year of entry.
Families requiring financial assistance with paying Benenden’s tuition fees are encouraged to apply for a means-tested bursary. The financial assessment will consider factors such as income, expenses and assets. Households earning a joint disposable income below £30,000 may be eligible for a full bursary, whereas those with a combined income exceeding £120,000 generally do not qualify for financial assistance.
