Introduction

Oakham School is a co-educational day and boarding school for pupils aged 10-18. It is located in the heart of rural England and has a beautiful 70-acre campus. The school has a rich history, with the original 16th-century school building still in use today and its Chapel, an important part of school life, built as a memorial to Old Oakhamians who died in WW1.

The curriculum at Oakham School is broad and engaging. Experienced teachers deliver lessons of a high quality, enabling pupils to fulfil their academic potential. This means the school’s results in public examinations are excellent, and the majority of school leavers go on to study at top universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial and UCL.

Pupils joining in Year 9 (Form 3) will find their curriculum exciting and inspiring. Experiences outside the classroom will bring their classroom-based learning to life. Students will, for example, get the opportunity to visit the WW1 battlefields in France and complete an independent research project – the aim being to instil in pupils a lifelong love of learning.

The co-curricular programme at Oakham School is extensive, helping to make pupils’ time at the school enjoyable and memorable. Available activities (of which there are over 125) include rock climbing, archery, ballet and lifeguarding. Furthermore, pupils are encouraged to spend time giving back to the local community, which they can do by getting involved with Voluntary Action. Through this, they can get a placement helping in a local primary school or nursery; help run activities for disabled, young people; or assist the elderly.

Pastoral care is taken very seriously at Oakham School, as the school recognises that pupils need to feel safe and secure to thrive. Tutors get to know their tutees well, which means they are in a position to offer support and guidance when necessary. In addition to this, each pupil belongs to a House (whether they are a boarder or day pupil) led by a Housemaster or Housemistress. Each House has a warm and welcoming environment, meaning pupils have a haven to relax in with their friends, which is beneficial for their mental wellbeing.

Oakham School Form 3/Year 9 (13+) Deferred Entry/Early Registration Admissions Process

Oakham School recommends that you visit the school so you can see for yourself how much it has to offer. You can attend the Whole School Open Event in May and/or arrange an individual visit. The Open Event is held on a Saturday and will give you the chance to look around the facilities, meet staff members, listen to a talk from the Head and speak to the admissions team (click here to book your place). Individual visits usually take place on a weekday, enabling you to see the school in action. You should contact the admissions team to arrange an individual visit (contact details are further down).

If you decide to register your child for a deferred place for Form 3 (Year 9), you need to complete a registration form and pay a £150 registration fee.

Your child will take a bespoke online pre-test, sit a creative writing paper and be interviewed. This will typically happen between October and February of Year 7, with the pre-test normally being administered by your child’s current school and the creative writing paper and interview taking place at Oakham. A report and reference from your child’s current school will be reviewed as part of the process.

Offers made after the pre-test are conditional. Your child will need to take the Common Entrance exam at the end of Year 8 and get an average 55% pass mark to secure their place. If they go to a school that does not do the Common Entrance exam, they will sit Oakham’s entrance assessments in January of Year 8 instead.

Acceptance of a place involves paying a deposit, which will be refunded when your child leaves Oakham School.
