Introduction

Bury Grammar School (BGS) is a co-educational independent school for children aged 3-18. Founded over 450 years ago, the school is rightly proud of its history and is also proud to be forward-thinking and quick to adapt to the changing needs of its pupils.

Academically, Bury Grammar School is excellent. In the Seniors, girls and boys are taught separately, which reduces distractions in the classroom. BGS believes this allows pupils to develop into independent learners who can think critically and take risks. Pupils study a wide range of subjects in the Senior School, including traditional subjects, such as maths, chemistry and history, as well as non-traditional subjects, such as drama & theatre studies, economics and design technology.

The enrichment programme at the Senior School of BGS is extensive, enabling pupils to grow into accomplished and confident young adults. Over 100 clubs and societies are available, including cookery, chess, robotics and cheerleading. In addition to this, the school holds an annual production. Around 150 pupils will be involved in this, whether that be acting, designing sets, stage managing, performing in the orchestra, working in the costume department, doing hair and make-up or helping with publicity. Participating helps pupils learn how to work as a team while having fun.

Pastoral care is taken very seriously at Bury Grammar School, as the school is committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment to all pupils. Assemblies, PSHE lessons and high expectations all help shape pupils into tolerant and caring people. Pupils who do experience any difficulties will always have someone they can turn to, whether this be a trusted member of staff, the counsellor, the School Health Team or a pupil Mental Health Ambassador.

Address: Tenterden Street, Bury, BL9 0HN

County: Historic county of Lancashire

Admissions: [email protected] or 0161 696 8600 (option 1)

School type: Co-educational independent day school

Entrance exams: English paper, maths paper and MidYIS test (successful candidates will then be interviewed)

Year 7 (11+) is the standard entry point for admission to the Senior School at BGS, so if you are interested in your child joining in Year 8 or 9, the best thing to do is contact the admissions team to see if there are any places available and arrange a visit if there are. Visiting the school will enable you to learn more about its ethos and see for yourself what it has to offer.

If you decide you do want a place for your child, you will need to fill out the application form, and then your child will be invited to the school to take papers in English and maths and sit a MidYIS (Middle Years Information System) test. References from your child’s current school will be requested and reviewed. Candidates who perform well in the entrance exams will then be interviewed.

Please note that for Year 8 entry, your child can join at any point during the academic year. However, for Year 9 entry, your child would need to join at the start of the academic year because this is when pupils at BGS begin their three-year GCSE courses.

If your child is offered a place, you will need to complete and sign an online contract and pay the acceptance deposit.

Bury Grammar School: Scholarships and Bursaries

Scholarships and bursaries are not available for 12+ and 13+ entry to BGS. Scholarships and bursaries are offered to a limited number of pupils who enter the Senior School at the start of Year 7 and to select pupils entering the Sixth Form at the start of Year 12.

Bury Grammar School: Online Exam Format

The MidYIS test is an online test that is produced by CEM (Centre for Evaluation & Monitoring). It is very similar to CEM Select, which is also produced by CEM. Both assess a candidate’s Verbal, Non-Verbal and Numerical reasoning abilities.

The MidYIS test is designed for children between the ages of 11 and 14 and has an average duration of 50 minutes.

Preparing for the Bury Grammar School Online Test

Given that the MidYIS test is very similar to CEM Select, we recommend that your child works their way through our CEM Select practice tests before sitting the entrance exams for 12 + or 13+ entry to Bury Grammar School. Doing this will help them in the following ways when it comes to the MidYIS test:

  • Getting used to the online format and the types of questions that will come up means there will be no surprises on the day that might negatively impact your child’s performance.
  • Your child will be able to identify their strengths, which can help with their confidence before the big day.
  • Your child can identify any weaknesses and work on these areas, turning them into strengths by the time of the actual test.
  • Your child can learn from their mistakes by looking at the answers and explanations provided with the practice tests. This will help them avoid making similar errors in the actual test.
  • Your child will get used to working under time pressure, becoming adept at working quickly and accurately as they work their way through the practice tests.

Bury Grammar School: Online Test Practice Materials

The following CEM Select online practice tests are highly recommended for successful preparation for the Bury Grammar School 12+ and 13+ MidYIS test, given that both the MidYIS test and CEM Select are produced by CEM and have a number of common features.

Online Practice Tests

Each test contains unique content, but they are all pitched at the same difficulty level as the actual assessment. This means you can easily benchmark your child’s progress as they work through the practice tests, quickly identifying their strengths and weaknesses. The practice tests contain six timed modules. These can be completed individually. Once a module is complete, it is marked automatically. Your child will then be able to review it in detail, with answers and explanations provided for every question. Statistical averages based on the scores of other students who have taken the practice test are also provided.
