Introduction

Cardiff Sixth Form College was founded in 2004 and aimed to be academically excellent from the outset. Outstanding teaching, small class sizes and students receiving plenty of one-to-one support made that aim a reality and led to the establishment expanding as the College’s stellar reputation grew and grew.

The College admits students to study  A-Levels and also accepts students at 14+ entry (Year 10) for two-year GCSE courses and 15+ entry (Year 11) for one-year GCSE courses. Students taking GCSEs will participate fully in life at the College.

International students were first welcomed to Cardiff Sixth Form College in 2009, and now the College has students from more than 40 countries. This creates a vibrant, multicultural environment that reflects the College’s global outlook. Students are encouraged to always be tolerant and respectful of each other.

Around 85% of students board at the College, with boarding available for both A-Level and GCSE students. Experienced boarding staff help boarders to feel safe and happy by creating a friendly family environment for them. Staff get to know the boarders well, which means they can guide students through any difficulties they might face and be there to celebrate their achievements.

Wellbeing Officers, who have a wealth of experience, provide individual appointments and workshops for students, meaning any student struggling with their mental health has someone and somewhere to turn to.

Cardiff Sixth Form College: Admissions Process for Year 12 (A-Level) Entry and Years 10-11 (GCSE) Entry

The first step of the admissions process is to visit Cardiff Sixth Form College so you can see for yourself what it has to offer. This will give you the opportunity to explore the facilities, find out about the College’s ethos, chat with current students and ask any questions you have. You can attend an Open Day or arrange an individual visit by clicking here and filling out the appropriate form.

If it is not possible to visit in person, a Cardiff representative may be able to come and meet you! Representatives travel all over the world to meet prospective students. Click here for more information.

Completing an online application form and paying the non-refundable registration fee is the next step in the admissions process. Cardiff Sixth Form College is highly academic, so you should be confident you can meet their standards before deciding to apply.

Applicants will then sit the relevant exams (please see the section above for details) and be interviewed (this can be in person or via Zoom). A report from your current school will also be looked at as part of the admissions process.

UK students applying to do A-Levels will need at least six GCSEs at grade 8/9. International students will need to show they have the required proficiency in English by taking the IELTS (International English Language Testing System), except for international students applying for two-year GCSE courses. Offers made before the results of these exams are known will be conditional.

If you receive an offer, you will need to fill out the acceptance form and pay the acceptance deposit within a set timeframe. The acceptance deposit is refundable when you finish your education at the College.

Please contact Cardiff Sixth Form College directly if you have any questions about their admissions process.

Cardiff Sixth Form College: Scholarships for A-Level Students

Scholarships allow a small number of exceptionally bright students of limited financial means to take their A-Levels at Cardiff Sixth Form College. Scholars are expected to have exemplary behaviour and to make the most of all the College has to offer.

International students who apply for a scholarship, worth up to 50% of the tuition fees, must submit the scholarship application form when they register. They will then take scholarship exams in the subjects they will study for A-Level and not the entrance papers for those subjects. Scholarships will be awarded based on performance in the scholarship exams, the CAT4 online reasoning test, the interview and the quality of the report from the candidate’s current school.

Scholarships for day students are worth up to 100% of the tuition fees. Typically, scholars will achieve 9 GCSEs at grade 8/9 in academic subjects. They will also need to perform well in the entrance exams (one of which will be a scholarship exam), the CAT4 online assessment and the interview. In addition to this, their school report will need to be impressive, as will their application letter.

Scholarships are not available to those who will be taking GCSEs at Cardiff Sixth Form College.

Cardiff Sixth Form College: CAT4 (Cognitive Abilities Test) GL Assessment Format

The CAT4 is a reasoning test set by GL Assessment. For entry to Cardiff Sixth Form College, the CAT4 is taken online. It consists of multiple-choice questions that cover Verbal reasoning, Non-Verbal reasoning, Quantitative reasoning and Spatial reasoning.

  • The Verbal reasoning questions assess your ability to solve problems using words.

  • The Non-Verbal reasoning questions assess your ability to solve problems by analysing visual information.

  • The Quantitative reasoning questions assess your ability to solve problems using numbers.

  • The Spatial reasoning questions assess your ability to understand how objects can move in a three-dimensional world.

If you are applying to do GCSEs at the College, you will take Level F of the CAT4. If you are applying to do A-Levels, you will take Level G.

Please note that you will not be disadvantaged by your age when you sit the CAT4 because your score will be adjusted according to your age.

How to Prepare for the Cardiff Sixth Form College CAT4 GL Assessment

At Pretest Plus, we believe that considered preparation will significantly boost a student’s confidence and enhance their performance in competitive entrance examinations.

Working your way through our online CAT4 practice tests will help you be prepared for the CAT4 in the following ways:

  • You will become familiar with the types of questions asked in the CAT4, meaning there will be no surprises on the day.
  • You will get used to working under time pressure and understand the pace you need to work at.
  • Looking at the answers and detailed explanations for each question, you will learn from any mistakes you make and be able to avoid repeating them in the actual exam.
  • You will be able to identify your strengths and weaknesses, meaning you can then devote more time to your weaker areas, turning them into areas of strength.

Improving across all the areas that will be tested in the CAT4 will assist you in being well-equipped to meet the academic demands of Cardiff Sixth Form College.
