Introduction

Located on the River Thames, City of London School is an independent day school for boys aged 10 to 18 years. City of London School was founded in 1442 and currently educates about 900 pupils.

The School, also known as City, encourages its boys to be ambitious, confident and generous, whilst emphasizing that their educational path can also be an enjoyable one.

How to Apply for 11 Plus Entry to City of London School

City of London School accepts around 60 boys every year at 11 Plus level. The school offers two routes of entry for Year 7 pupils – 1) A full fee-paying or Scholarship place 2) A means-tested bursary (known as a Sponsored Award) to cover all fees.

To be considered for a place, prospective pupils must be registered for City’s entrance examinations ahead of the deadline. When registering, parents or guardians are required to pay a non-refundable deposit of £150 and provide a three year history of the boy’s school background. More details can be found on City’s website, here.

City of London School 11 Plus Screening Test

Before Year 7 places can be allocated, Sponsored Award candidates must complete a computerised reasoning test called CEM Select in the January of Year 6. Boys who perform well in this test will be invited to the next stage of the process, alongside all other registered candidates.

The next stage consists of examinations in Mathematics, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. You can learn how to prepare for this second stage here. Those that do well will then be invited to City for an admissions interview, which usually takes place in February.

The computerised reasoning screening test for Sponsored Award candidates is designed to give the school an overview of a pupil’s potential in an academic environment. The test is typically taken online and is age-standardised, ensuring that no one candidate has an advantage over another based on their age.

City of London School Admissions Criteria

Offers to City of London School at 11+ level are usually made based on a boy’s performance in the screening test (if applicable), a short admissions interview with staff and a confidential report from the Head of the candidate’s current school.

If your child has applied for a Sponsored Award place at City, they must satisfy all of the criteria above as well as the school’s financial eligibility benchmark.

For more information about the admissions process at City of London School, contact the Registrar on 0203 680 6300 or email [email protected].
