Introduction
Birkdale School is a co-ed independent school in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Characterised by a strong Christian heritage, it was established in 1904 and currently caters for approximately 1000 pupils. [1]
In the Senior School, an abundance of subject options complements the academic curriculum. Pupils get to study ICT, MFL, science, humanities and mathematics, among others, stretching their abilities in line with the school’s culture of achievement.
Sports are considered fundamental to the school’s after-class provision, thus successes in the areas of cricket, football, tennis and golf are standard. Co-curricular clubs further enrich the time spent at Birkdale, ranging from Mandarin and chess to percussion and History Society to successfully meet the cohort’s changing interests. [2]

Birkdale School hosts Open Day in October, allowing prospective families to explore the campus and learn first-hand about everything on offer. Tours of facilities and meetings with senior staff members, including the Head, will be arranged.
In the next stage of the admissions process, it is required that you register your child with the school by completing a registration form, which can be accessed through this page.
The entrance examination will take place in January of the calendar year of entry. Offer letters are typically sent out the following February.

To join in Year 7, your child will be asked to complete an online assessment called the ISEB Common Pretest, which assesses skills in Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The test provides a universal and standardised measure of attainment, ability and potential.

The ISEB Pretest assessment will cover the following areas:
- English – covers comprehension, sentence completion, spelling and punctuation.
- Maths – measures mathematical ability relative to the national curriculum stage.
- Verbal Reasoning – tests thinking and problem solving with words.
- Non-Verbal Reasoning – assesses thinking with shapes, space, diagrams and pictures.
In total, the four parts of the ISEB Common Pre-test take approximately 2.5 hours to administer and complete. There is no audio component to any of the tests.
