Edgbaston High School for Girls is an independent day school for girls in Birmingham. Operational since 1876, it is noted as a high-achieving establishment that has educated many notable alumni, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai. [1]

The curriculum effectively develops pupils’ skills, ensuring that they parallel the school’s culture of success. The wealth of subject options such as mathematics, science, DT, religious studies and MFL, is coupled with forward-looking teaching to reinforce girls’ passion for learning.

Numerous extracurriculars support the spirit of innovation that pervades Edgbaston High’s community, introducing the cohort to a wide selection of new interests. Among the provided opportunities are gardening, debating, psychology, orchestra, Model UN, fencing, Business Club and swimming. [2]

Intellectual curiosity is at the heart of the Edgbaston High ethos, allowing girls to explore their academic limitations as they approach the ever-changing world beyond school. As a result, they succeed at identifying their strengths early on, securing outcomes of exceptional standard in whatever endeavour they choose to pursue.

11 Plus (11+) Exam Format at Edgbaston High School for Girls

As part of the assessment process to join in Year 7, your child will be asked to complete an online assessment similar to CEM Select, which measures your child’s Verbal, Non-Verbal and Numerical Reasoning abilities. CEM Select is created by the Centre of Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM), which is a part of Cambridge Assessment.

The CEM Select assessment will cover the following areas:

  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning
  • Numerical Reasoning

The Verbal Reasoning section of the test assesses your child’s ability to solve problems using words, with a special focus on depth and breadth of vocabulary.

The Non-Verbal Reasoning section requires your child to solve problems using shapes and patterns with a main focus on one specific question type.

The Numerical Reasoning section assesses your child’s ability to solve problems using numbers and arithmetic.
